Car Review: VW GTI Spells Excitement On Road

Car Review: VW GTI Spells Excitement On Road

The 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI combines genuine performance with the hatchback practicality. The 鈥渉ot hatch鈥?is an absolute thrill to drive with 0-60 in 6 seconds acceleration and go-kart-like handling. The GTI has a wide stance with low ground clearance, and my tester was painted bright red. A 6-speed manual transmission added to the experience. 1,100. The clutch action was light and non-taxing even in stop-and-go city traffic. A powerful 2.0-liter, in-line 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine, is capable of cranking out 220 horsepower with 258 lb.-ft. G-forces can be felt as the compact engine rockets the Volkswagen up to speed, especially when working through second and third gears. The GTI also has selectable driving modes that allow you to dial in the steering heft and throttle response. The modes also affect suspension; the 鈥淪port鈥?mode improves cornering performance, and 鈥淐omfort鈥?smooths out the highway bumps. Overall, handling was confident and predictive.

The same engine is standard throughout the GTI鈥檚 three trim levels, the S, SE and Autobahn, with 33 mpg highway and 25 in the city, with slightly less fuel economy with the optional automatic transmission. 31,165 receives an 8-inch touch screen neatly integrated into the center console, LED headlamps and taillights are included as well as blind-spot monitoring. 26,415 with a 6.5-inch touch screen. The GTI鈥檚 cockpit is well laid out and the spartan interior is solidly built. Both front and rear seats were upholstered in black leather. Brushed aluminum highlights along with red ambient lighting played well against the black interior. Red stitching on the steering wheel and seats further enhanced the mood. The firm-yet-comfortable front bucket seats are partially power adjustable; it鈥檚 much quicker to manually move the seat. Sharp-looking plaid cloth seating for a little money is also available. My tester also had a power tilting/sliding panoramic sunroof. The rear seats are 60/40-split folding with center armrest and have a pass-through access to the rear cargo area. Another feature worth noting is Volkswagen鈥檚 six-year/72,000 bumper-to-bumper limited warranty, which can be transferred to subsequent owners throughout its duration. The GTI鈥檚 low-profile summer tires enhance the front-wheel-drive hatchback鈥檚 performance, providing a direct connection to the road. However, a set of all-season tires may be necessary to make it through the New England winter. 40,000. The Ford Focus ST, Honda Civic Si, and Subaru WRX are also worth considering.
