Towing Capacities Of Volkswagen Vehicles

Utility is a reason so many people buy trucks and SUVs, but sometimes there are other types of vehicles with more capability than you think. Knowing the towing capacity and capability of your car or a car you’re considering is important. Not only is it important to know that a vehicle is equipped to tow, but it’s also important to only tow what the vehicle can handle. So, when you’re prepping for a road-trip around Park Ridge, you’ll know exactly what kind of camper, boat, ATV, etc. to bring! How Much Can Every Volkswagen Tow? While the VW Golf towing weight and others are marked “Not Recommended,” there are a few models worth noting. Also, towing is not exclusive only to the VW SUVs. So, how much can every Volkswagen tow, exactly? We have put together a helpful chart of Volkswagen models, noting if the vehicles are equipped to tow and if so, what that towing capacity is. Learn More About the VW Lineup from Jennings Volkswagen! If you’re looking for a new Volkswagen vehicle capable of towing more than a light load, you’ll either want to consider the Tiguan or Atlas. Both vehicles are incredibly capable and offer a lot of utility. To find out more about these VW SUVs, contact us at Jennings Volkswagen to schedule a test drive near Northbrook and Park Ridge!

The Porsche Macan SUV arrived in 2014 to great fanfare. Complementing the Cayenne in the German brand’s SUV range, it opened up Porsche ownership to an even wider range of buyers - but it earned its stripes on merit. The original was a peach to drive, with a premium image that meant owners loved it. There was a good choice of powertrains, too, with V6 petrol and diesel models offering differing performance. However, diesel is no more in the updated Macan line-up. Instead, the most efficient model is now this 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit. It was available on special order in the old car, but few UK buyers took up the option. With this renewed focus on petrol power, the facelifted Macan is set to be much more popular. The Porsche has always been an SUV for keen drivers, so its main competitor is clearly the Jaguar F-Pace - another premium package that focuses on petrol-powered driving enjoyment mixed with quality, practicality and equipment. This 2.0-litre car is the entry-level model in the new Macan range.

Prices start from £46,344, so it’s well matched to the F-Pace. However, it’ll have to live up to the Jag’s new technology, too. Let’s find out how much of an improved package the Porsche is. Under the skin, the Macan still uses the same platform, so there are no huge changes here. That means the basic suspension layout remains, with double wishbones at the front and a multi-link set-up at the rear. However, there are lighter but firmer springs, which are claimed to improve handling without compromising comfort. Other alterations ensure it’s even more refined. The optional Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM) function is probably worth its £816 cost to broaden the Macan’s ability. The 2.0-litre unit is the same basic motor as that fitted to VW’s Golf GTI Performance, with a particulate filter in the exhaust for this updated car. There’s 242bhp, 370Nm of torque and a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox, only here it sends power to all four wheels.

There are more changes inside the Porsche - the most important of which is the new 10.9-inch infotainment screen. It’s similar in appearance and operation to the units in the Panamera, Cayenne and the latest 911, and it’s here where the new Macan gets its largest technology update. The rest of the cabin is similar to its predecessor’s, which means even in this entry-level car quality is impressive. The centre console still features a few too many buttons and switches compared with the simpler set-up in Porsche’s newer models, though. You get a good standard of basic kit, with sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, DAB, 18-inch alloys, LED lights, cruise and climate control, a power tailgate and parking sensors. However, features such as a full-leather interior are extra, at £1,044, while heated seats cost £294. Both are standard on the Jag, but the Macan’s cabin quality still feels stronger than the F-Pace’s.

Buying The Best Used Brake Lathe

If you are in the market for a brake lathe, you may have considered buying a used one. There are an amazing range of makes and models that can machine disc rotors alone or disc rotors and brake drums using a separate cutter bar. The West and some others will also machine flywheels and other flat surfaces that can be mounted. Amongst the used brake lathes on the market there are a few to avoid if you want good parts supply, back up service and no design faults that you have to work around. For example, the early Ravaglioli had an aluminium alloy cutting head fixed on one side. When the aluminium wears, which it does, it is very difficult to set it up the brake lathe to do an accurate cut, and it is inclined to resonate and vibrate the disc during the machining. Parts like the diaphragm or concertina that covers the feed shaft are expensive and can be hard to find too.

Both problems can be solved with some innovation, so if you have lots of skill and little money, you may want to take it on. They are otherwise very good brake lathes. 4k for one with no faults. 1.5k for a sound machine that needs some repairs. Parts can be difficult to find. The design of the drive is antiquated. The arbor location lock is poorly designed. A very good brake lathe that can still be found in good order, although getting a bit jaded because the later model one was better fitted out, with less problems to keep it adjusted and running smoothly. Here is what to look for. The of/on switch gets replaced but not sealed properly and can fill up with oil. The belt and electric motor pulley can get very worn and interfere with the cut. It is important to run later model bull-nosed cutters in these models for best results. They break detent springs. The crossfeed shaft adjustment is finicky and unreliable if the operator is not on the ball it will move on it's onion nut.

These shafts can be upgraded to the JB special model which is simply a later model FMC, and retains most of the original lathe. The main drive nut wears out quickly if not kept well lubricated. This is quite expensive to replace. So expensive that I made a few for myself out of the same high quality materials in the original. Pay up to 3k for one in mint condition, 1k for one that needs tooling up and refurbishing. There are still a lot of parts available for the early 600 model and tooling is no problem at all as the newer model tools are identical. All the Ammco brake lathes regardless of model will do what they were designed to do and do it longer and better than any of the others listed here. With the heavy duty model disc/drum Ammco you can get a truck kit, which consists of a massiive arbor, all tools including truck disc mounting cones, cups and support for the large truck drums. I have refurbished, re-tooled and completely rebuilt dozens of early model Ammcos some more than 40 years old.

They have all been capable of running to new machine specifications after being repaired or re-tooled and adjusted. 1-2k for one that needs a lot of work. The Kwik-Way is a small brake lathe with a standard lightweight cutter similar to the on-car cutter heads. It works well, but will not handle the heavy work that an Ammco, JB, FMC or anyof the other leading names that use a heavy cutter head to avoid vibrations and oscilations that take place when machining discs. Parts are getting harder to find but as long as the main drive is still in good shape most other bits can be found. 500 to 1k for one that needs any work. This Australian made brake lathe is beautifully built and has the strongest cutter assembly on any brake lathe I have seen. It is very heavy with huge bearings and gears. These lathes are not common any more but a good one will do a perfect job on any disc. Having a tailpiece for the arbor, it is somewhat like a metal lathe as is the ravaglioli above.

Volkswagen Replaces Its Battery Cell Supplier

Starting this month - with the new 35,8 kWh battery for the 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf - Volkswagen will begin to use Samsung SDI as its supplier for battery cells. This means that Panasonic/Sanyo loses a big customer for their battery cells, but it doesn’t seem that important since Tesla and now Toyota - with the Prius Prime - will keep the demand high. As a side note, I’ve to say that in my previous articles I wrongly assumed that Volkswagen would keep Panasonic/Sanyo as its battery cell supplier and I’ve to thank Grendizer for the heads up. In the photo below we can see the Samsung SDI 37 Ah battery cell that will be used to build Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche) battery packs. To better understand why Volkswagen changed its battery cell supplier, let’s see the Volkswagen roadmap for battery upgrades in the below. Samsung SDI realized they could do better and developed the 37 Ah battery cell that can directly replace the old 25 Ah made by Panasonic/Sanyo.

This demonstrates the dedication of Samsung SDI to get more automakers as its customers. These 37 Ah battery cells and the ones they are replacing share one common characteristic. They have the high energy density required for BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) and the high power density that’s required for PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles). The Samsung SDI 37 Ah battery cells will also be used in BMW plug-in hybrid cars - which will get battery capacity upgrades this year. To sum up, it’s great to see Samsung SDI with two major automakers as clients (BMW and Volkswagen), with Mercedes joining the list later with the EQ sub-brand. The bad news for Samsung SDI is that the German automakers are still dragging their feets to build electric cars. This is why the Samsung SDI battery cell plant in Europe (Hungary) will only start operating in 2018 with an annual capacity to supply 50.000 EV batteries. This highly contrasts with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s battery supplier (LG Chem) plans for Europe. LG Chem battery plant in Poland will start operating already this year with an annual production capacity of 100.000 EV batteries. In this aspect, LG Chem is in much better position as the Alliance’s battery cell supplier and Panasonic also is very comfortable with Tesla and Toyota in its customers list.

I began looking at electric cars last summer, but realized soon in the buying experience was more complicated than normal. While I was able to eliminate the Ford Focus, Kia Soul, and Nissan Leaf on test drives, trying to statistically rank the remaining contenders proved difficult. Range and charge time should be the driving factors with an EV purchase or lease, but these vary based on driving profile and charger availability. The EPA’s “MPGe” statistic is worthless, because it’s based on the cost of gas (which fluctuates) vs. Throw in sales people who are for the most part clueless on EV specifics and confusing pricing on government rebates, and it’s a quick way to leave your head spinning. In short, it’s very easy to make a mistake and has caused me to delay my decision as much as possible. A few weeks ago I Googled “Rent a Volt” and came across Turo, which can be best thought of AirBnB for cars. 60 per day. With just a credit card and driver’s license I was able to start setting up rental appointments.

I typically requested them 48 hours in advance and had no problem getting a prompt reply back from the “host” to confirm the rental and make pickup arrangements. 10). 2015 was the first year for the e-Golf and it came in two trim models: Limited and SEL. For 2016, VW replaced with Limited with the SE and dropped the price, but also dropped the charger’s power (more on that later). The Volkswagen Golf is an attractive and fun city car that does well on the highway, and the e-Golf was no different. It felt extremely natural to me, like a mini version of my 2004 Subaru Forester. Visibility both out the front and sides was good, and it felt nimble coming around corners. The best part was an instant yet nicely gradual acceleration coming off traffic lights. It had enough “pop” to be fun, but not too much to feel like an amusement park ride.
