Suzuki Unveils Slick New Saloon

Indicating its most important market, Suzuki chose to unveil its new mid-size saloon yesterday (July 30) near Detroit, USA. The Kizashi, named after a 2007 concept car, is sized to compete with the likes of the Mazda6 and Honda Accord and will eventually be available with a hybrid powertrain. Although European specifications have yet to be confirmed, the Kizashi (apparently meaning 'something great is coming') has been seen undergoing testing on the gruelling Nurburgring test track, which usually points to a chassis developed for use on European roads. At the launch, Suzuki spoke of a single 2.4-litre petrol engine option, with a V6 and hybrid alternatives arriving in the future. However, we'd expect a turbodiesel version to be available from the start of UK sales. Transmission options include a CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic with paddle shifters and the availability of four-wheel drive. Pictures from the unveiling depict a spacious and well laid out cabin that should compare well to mid-level cars in the D-segment. The Kizashi's exterior style should certainly set it apart too. It's possible that a European version of the Kizashi will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Flashback to the Fifties, when more powerful Buicks had more holes. But they didn't serve any real function then, and still do not today. Still, we like them. Two new exterior colors, Light Quartz Metallic and Gold Mist Metallic, are available for '07. These include hydroformed frame rails for a stiffer body and use of laminated steel with plenty of sound deadening material placed in strategic locations. Buick engineers shaped the outside of the door mirrors to lessen wind noise. Laboratory test results show that the Lucerne is quieter than a Lexus ES 330. This was also evident in a back-to-back driving comparison. Much like the exterior, the Lucerne's interior is cleanly designed with just enough touches of wood and chrome trim to make it luxurious without being opulent. The dashboard is fairly traditional in design with a smallish instrument pod containing three round gauges in front of the steering wheel.

The center stack is located high up for easy access, and contains large knobs for operating the climate control and audio system. Standard on all '07 Buicks is OnStar with Turn-by-Turn service, which allows customers to talk to a live advisor, who in turn downloads complete step-by-step directions to the vehicle through the OnStar system. Audio directions are then automatically played through the vehicle's stereo as they are needed, triggered by the OnStar system's GPS capabilities. Drivers can be directed to their destinations without having to take their hands from the wheel or eyes from the road. And a touch-screen navigation system that can display a map is also available. Buyers who want seating for six can order a traditional front bench seat. Most people instead opt for bucket seats, which provide a good level of comfort and come with an armrest in the center console. Rear-seat passengers are well taken care of with good headroom and excellent leg room.

The long wheelbase also allows for a wider-opening rear door with almost no intrusion from the wheel well, making it easy to get in and out of the car. The Buick Lucerne is a smooth but spirited car. The ride quality is excellent, thanks to its long wheelbase and stiff body structure. In back-to-back driving along a stretch of less-than-perfect road, we found the Lucerne's ride quality comparable to that of the benchmark Toyota Avalon. Buick loyalists who are used to a cushy ride will not complain about the Lucerne. It might be stiffer than they are used to, but it's still plenty smooth. The steering is precise and responsive, and the suspension is well controlled, even at high speeds along not always smooth roads. The CXS comes with Magnetic Ride Control, which we found improved the handling a bit, though the differences were not dramatic. Magnetic Ride Control is an adaptive damping system designed to enhance overall ride performance. With Magnetic Ride Control, the shock absorbers are filled with a synthetic fluid in which magnetically charged particles are suspended.

Volkswagen Working On Three Mk. VI Variations

I'll admit, this summer has been bereft of Volkswagen news, aside of course from the occasional rumour or spyshot. But the fall is coming and that also means we are closing in on the Paris Motor Show this October. Ahead of the show, we are now receiving details on some of the Mk. VI Golf's variants, namely the GTI, the R version, and the GTD. The GTI (spyshot pictured), a concept of which is said to be unveiled at Paris, will receive a power bump by 10 bringing the total output to 210 hp. Much like the current GTI, the 6th gen GTI should reach 60 in under 7 seconds and have a top speed of 150 mph. Expect this out in the (European) market middle of 2009. Sources also say that, like the launch of the Mk. V in the US, the GTI will be brought to North America ahead of the Rabbit (or Golf if Volkswagen decides to return to the classic nomenclature). The R version of the Mk. VI as we've mentioned before will forgo the six banger in favour of a 4 cylinder engine. Fans are already foaming in the mouth. But don't worry too much, the next R version is said to make 270 hp and will also have AWD. I must admit, 270 hp and AWD in a much lighter car thanks to a 4 cylinder sounds pretty sweet! Lastly, the GTD, a diesel version of the GTI, is expected to produce 170 hp from its common rail diesel engine. Release is expected in April of next year.

Buyers of even the least expensive Q5 will enjoy an intuitive infotainment system displayed in a dashtop 7.0-inch screen; an 8.3-inch unit is optional. The Q5 has fared excellently in crash tests from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the latter of which called the Audi a Top Safety Pick. Automated emergency braking and forward-collision warning are both standard and other driver-assistance features becomes available in the pricier models. Audi's warranty coverage for the 2019 Q5 is average, and many rivals offer longer coverage periods. Buyers of brand-new Q5 models can take advantage of a free service for their first scheduled maintenance visit at 10,000 miles.

Exterior: The front part of the new Renault Clio has undergone a complete nose job. This time the car looks in line with that of the new Megane. The lower grille is much more wide and racy with huge gaps. The front lights have also become wider and seem more stretched. The back end of the car has new light systems and the renewed bumper give the Clio, the appearance of a wider car. Interior: The Renault Clio is outright spacious and comfortable. The car though lacks on the style aspect considering its French connection and is not as sleek as the interior of the Ford Fiesta. The car also falls short in terms of the car quality unlike the Volkswagen Polo. The Dynamique trim above gives a softer dashboard with quality materials. Practicality: The Renault Clio is best in class in terms of the cabin space in its segment.

Automobile Reviews Simply Done

This is Dodge’s baby for 2007 which started off as a concept SUV. Four-by-four’s are darlings of the Middle East market, and when they’re as radically designed as the new Dodge Nitro, it only eggs people to adopt the difference in appearance. At first glance the Nitro looks large and beefy. Exaggerated flared wheel arches and tough off-road tyres give it strong road presence. The body from after the front fender toward the rear closely resembles the Jeep Commander. There are no curves on the Nitro, its boxy design appears bold and unrelenting. Industrial strength exterior door handles are tough to look and use. The front bumper did catch our interest, if European cars have large open mouth radiator grilles; this bucking bronco has an extended chin and a very low one. The Nitro is available in two V6 engine variants (3.7 litre and 4 litre), the car we had for test had a transverse mounted Magnum 3.7 litre 205 hp easy-going motor which leisurely revved to a peak of 5200 RPM.

But the torque of 314 Nm@4000 RPM is what this motor is all about, it pulls away like a train, but a lot of its own body weight seems to bog it down. The motor only starts howling over 4000 RPM. Though even at city speeds, the exhaust note is deep, clearly announcing your arrival. Power delivery is smooth but the four-speed gearbox is a let down, it just doesn’t shift up or down as quickly as you’d want it to. Throttle response is sluggish as well, though once spanked; it goes like a scalded cat. All the torque can be put to particularly good use for towing and the Nitro has a small button that transfers all the juice to the rear wheels for best traction when towing. A tow hook has to be attached separately. Weighing in at 1.8 tons it wanted to swing its heavy rear out at turns, so we had to be careful. The long wheelbase of 2770mm is good for straight line stability but increases the turning radius to 12 metres. 210mm ground clearance is just about acceptable.

She is a respectable off-road vehicle with a part-time 4WD transfer case that can be switched via a dash mounted knob. In regular driving, 2-wheel-drive with the power going to the rear wheels, the steering feels light and ride quality is soft and bouncy. Even small indents on the road surface make her bob all over the place. The same suspension is very comfortable off the black, absorbing even the worst surfaces without a hitch. So it is more suitable for off-roading than on the road. As you sit high up, the visibility is extremely good and reversing is not an issue either, as there are no thick pillars to obstruct vision, though parking sensors would’ve been a bonus. Our Khaki coloured Nitro had khaki interiors, khaki dash board, khakhi cloth seat covers, khaki door trim, everything in a variant of Khakhi! The only bright spots being the chrome garnish on the shift knob and cleverly designed door release latches. A single disc DVD/CD/MP3/WMA player is standard (no video display screen) with six speakers.

The foot wells are illuminated and steering is adjustable for rake. The dashboard is flat in design and short people may have some ergonomic problems with having to reach out to all the switches. A triple-barrel speedo is attractive and backlit in white while the highly tactile buttons are backlit in green. Interior fit and finish is overall good but very rugged in design and feel. This makes the car feel brawny, women, are you reading this? The Nitro comes equipped with four airbags for the front passengers and disc brakes on all four wheels. ABS, EBD and ESP are standard through out the model range. Additionally, a tyre pressure monitoring system does a system check on start up and warns appropriately. Part of the problem with the bouncy on-road ride quality can be directed towards the 16” steel wheels, though an optional 20” rim is available in R/T trim, we’re assuming it will handle better with larger rims. Our Nitro came with 235/70 R16 off-road rubber.

The newest 2019 Audi Q5 will arrive with a lot of impressive updates. An all-new look is on the cards, the interior is more welcoming and modern while the exterior design is astonishing. Some exterior packages are in the offer as well, a Sport and Design packages are available that adds a new set of wheels and plenty of chrome materials. For an instance, standard wheels are 17-inch, while the 18-inch wheels are optional. Opt for one of those packages and you will get 19 or 21-inch wheels. Larger than its predecessor, the 2019 Audi Q5 is 15.3 feet long and 6.2 feet wide. However, thanks to the heavy use of aluminum materials, this SUV is lighter than the previous model. The upcoming Q5 will be around 200 pounds lighter. When it comes to the exterior look, Q5 comes with more sharp lines and more detailing. The bubbly feel is gone and is replaced for a more muscular crossover look. On top of that, the latest design is more aerodynamic. The front end adds angular headlights and a more menacing look. The front grille comes with harder edges and air intakes are lower.

If you think the exterior got some significant changes, you are wrong as the interior got even more updates. A familiar Audi’s interior design will remain but on the other hand, basically, everything from the inside is all-new. Nissan Leaf Vs. Volkswagen E-Golf

The Nissan Leaf is by far the best-selling electric car in the world, with almost 250,000 units sold as of mid-2016. But it's only one among a handful of all-electric, five-seat small cars sold in the U.S. Other five-door compact hatchbacks include the BMW i3, the lower-volume Ford Focus Electric and Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive, and a new entry launched for 2015, the Volkswagen e-Golf. Which one should you buy--the newer e-Golf, or the now more capable Leaf? When the electric VW appeared at dealerships in fall 2014, the technical specs of the e-Golf and Nissan Leaf were all but identical. The Leaf is now rated at 107 miles, while the VW stays at 83 miles--a notable difference. The e-Golf remains largely unchanged for 2017, but it is expected to receive a similar boost in capacity for the 2018 model year. For now, since we don't know anything about the 2017 Leaf, this comparison isn't quite complete since we've updated the way we rate cars. Range rating aside, the Leaf and e-Golf take diametrically opposed approaches to designing and selling electric cars.

The VW e-Golf is simply one of several different powertrains in the lineup of the seventh-generation Golf that launched last year. You have to look carefully to see that it's not a conventional Golf powered by a gasoline or diesel engine. The Leaf, on the other hand, is a dedicated electric vehicle sold only with battery power (though various underpinnings have been adapted from other Nissan models). After selling 90,000-plus Leafs in the U.S., the shape of Nissan's electric car is a familiar one--at least in places like California, where cars with plugs sell well. The design is distinctive and polarizing, with long headlights that sweep back almost to the base of the windshield and a snub nose with no grille at all, just a large central door that covers the charge ports. Golf, meaning a crisp-edged, conservatively styled hatchback obviously descended from the first Golf/Rabbit that hit U.S. 1970s to replace the mainstay Beetle.

On the road, the Leaf's steering, brakes, and handling are all competent, unremarkable, and noted only for being slightly numb. It's been called "appliance-like," which isn't necessarily as insulting as it may sound. Everything works, as expected, quietly and competently. The Golf is peppier and behaves more like a driver's car, with the same roadholding abilities as its four-cylinder counterparts--although it's had to be retuned for the added weight of the battery pack. The Golf interior is all but identical to that of any other Golf, while the Leaf's control layout and dashboard has some resemblance to the Space Age design of the Toyota Prius hybrid. The Leaf's battery packs, of 24 or 30 killowatt-hours (of which it uses about 85 percent) is not liquid-cooled. In earlier cars, that could lead to rapid capacity loss in extremely hot climates. A 2015 change to the battery chemistry makes the cells in the current car far more resistant to heat degradation, and Nissan says that has solved the problem. The VW's 24.2-kwh pack isn't liquid-cooled either, but no stories have emerged thus far about its durability.

Both cars have electric motors powering the front wheels, with outputs of 80 kilowatts (110 horspower) for the Leaf, and 85 kW (114 hp) for the e-Golf. The e-Golf can charge at up to 7.2 kw, meaning it will finish recharging a little quicker than the Leaf, which is fitted with a 6.6-kW charger onboard charger on all except the base model (which charges at 3.3 kW). The two cars are also all but identical in passenger volume: 91 cubic feet for the e-Golf, 92 cubic feet for the Leaf. The e-Golf has only 17 cubic feet behind the rear seat, though, against the Leaf rated at 24 cubic feet. That may be the penalty VW pays for using stampings adapted from those for gasoline cars. 40,000 if lavishly outfitted. With such similar specifications for certain model comparisons, buyers have three questions to consider. First, does a 107-mile range compared to 83 miles trump all other considerations? On that measure, the risk-averse will opt for the e-Golf.

I have written often about the overwhelming importance of design in successfully differentiating and branding products. We all know examples of well-designed products that become standards. The Ferrari sports car, the Rolex watch, the Barbie Doll, a Krups toaster or the PEZ candy dispenser are obvious examples of packaging, or product design that become ubiquitous to consumers around the world. When the rare Ferrari Testarossa roars by on the highway, we instantly know that the "yellow prancing horse" badge sits proudly and desirably on the world's most exotically styled automobile. One of the most famous industrial designers of the 20th century was Raymond Loewy. Born in France, Mr. Loewy became the designer of choice for manufacturers of consumable and non-consumable consumer products, industrial transport and corporate logo's as a result of the simple design cues that he often built his products around. Visitors to the Loewy shop often noted that there was a bowl of eggs prominently placed in his office.

Eggs were a real creative prop for all of Loewy's associates. They were not on hand to be deviled and eaten. Raymond Loewy felt that the egg was nature's perfect shape. The egg is oval, circular, oblong, smooth, white, and a peculiar combination of strong and brittle. No other shape is so compelling. When viewed it is pleasing, when held it is comforting. He made every effort to utilize the splendid inherent design features of the egg in his industrial design work. The simplicity of the shape became identifiable in "Loewy product designs". A list of the famous products, packages and corporate logo's that Loewy crafted during his long career is an amazing valediction of his creativity and range. This is an impressive list and many of these products are considered timeless and cutting edge to this day. Motor Trend and Car & Driver Magazine list the Studebaker Commander as among the most beautifully designed cars of the 1950's. Loewy designed locomotives of the 1940's are treated as classic art by railway buffs.

In almost every one of these designs the styling cues taken from the egg are visible to even the most untrained eye. Industrial design students study Loewy crafted products just as art students study Rembrandt or Picasso. Companies and entrepreneurs that revere and diligently work for highly stylized designs are much more likely to succeed in both the short and long run. Consider Ralph Lauren's Polo lines of clothing. The attention to detail, design, quality and manic maintenance of the brand as a lifestyle product has established Polo as a classic, decade after decade. Calvin Klein clothing enjoys a similar status based on the brands positioning as cutting edge, urban styling. The Benetton brand, on the other hand, was immensely successful in the 1980's. However, the Company did not maintain its design creativity and has largely been in decline. Of course today, the automobile industry is being roiled by production overcapacity issues, a global credit crisis and high fuel prices. In no industry is design as crucial as in the car business. And yet, it is almost impossible to differentiate one car from another on modern roads.

The success of BMW's Mini, the new Volkswagen Beetle, the Cadillac CTS, the Mazda Miata and the Buick Enclave are due almost entirely to their unique, sleek body styles. They are nowhere near the cheapest vehicles in their categories. They simply scream "cool, buy me"! Why do so many other car manufacturers not take note of the importance of differentiating, compelling design features when producing box-like, indifferent, cookie cutter travel conveyances totally lacking in special personality. Every aspect of a products design and presentation is crucial to creating a strong, lasting brand identity in the target consumers mind. The logo must reflect the features, benefits and positioning that is unique to a product. The packaging must stand up to the competition and support the branding message being conveyed. The products logo, iconography, colors, printing fonts and package copy must be married to the container and the contents of the product itself. Well designed products seem natural, seamless. They draw the eye. They do not attack the senses. Raymond Loewy's use of the egg as a favored creative prop is a clever device that can easily be copied. The egg would seem, as a basic foodstuff, not to offer much for industrial designers by way of providing inspiration. Nevertheless, Loewy had an eye for simple, elegant styling and saw unique art properties in the shape of the egg. These he utilized fully and created his own unique design style. The potential to replicate this use of naturally occurring or man-made design features is omnipresent. The successful new product will incorporate the best possible creative devices borrowed from wherever they can be harvested.
