We need more. We know that. We’re launching more,” Nordlicht said. "Cadillac makes driver's cars. The core of the brand is around passion. It's been that way for 115 years. We care very passionately about cars that make design statements, are fun to drive and are luxurious."

We'll find out next year at this time whether or not that remains true, but all indications point towards some interesting times ahead for Cadillac. Here's hoping some hot rod-like SUVs will be a part of that, especially since the future of coupes, such as the ATS and ATS-V, isn't looking so good.

Electric All-Wheel-Drive Coming To Cadillac, Starting With V Cars And Crossovers

It could spread all the way over to Chevrolet.

Cadillac has been doing well against its German rivals when it comes to luxury and driving enjoyment, and doing very well when it comes to raw horsepower. But when it comes to electrification, the wreath and crest is far behind BMW, and, for that matter, behind everybody in the area of all-wheel-drive. But it seems that Cadillac has plans for both of those areas, and is working to develop an electric AWD system for use first in its V cars and crossovers.

The system is a form of hybrid propulsion, whereby the gasoline engine powers the rear wheels only and the front wheels are driven by electricity. A similar kind of system (albeit with diesel instead of gasoline) was used in Audi's R18 race car to win Le Mans back in June. It is a performance-oriented system, and has a chance of making onto the Camaro and some form of Corvette as well. That said, it's still a long way from being ready. Retrofitting an existing platform for this kind of drivetrain would be very difficult, so it won't be until the next generation of V cars when we see it.

Cadillac XT4 Compact Crossover Coming To New York Next Month

It will be only the beginning of a major product offensive.

Cadillac has made no secret regarding the existence of its upcoming XT4 compact crossover. We’ve seen spy shots of test mules for quite some time now, and according to Automotive News, the production XT4 will debut late next month at the New York Auto Show. It makes sense the Big Apple’s annual car show is the chosen venue for this important premiere because Cadillac is now headquartered in that city. If you recall, GM has gone to great efforts to further separate its luxury brand from the rest in order to boost its status.

The XT4 will be Cadillac’s second crossover, following the larger XT5 (pictured here). The Escalade will remain a large body-on-frame SUV for the foreseeable future. Crossovers are vital to Cadillac’s future bottom line, especially since sales of sedans have decreased over the past few years. As such, the next generation ATS, CTS and XTS will continue through their current lifecycles, but their eventual successors will be consolidated to two models. It’s still too early to know which of the three will get killed off, but another earlier report claimed the ATS sedan is already living on borrowed time, despite being one of the brand’s current best sellers.

Sales of luxury compact crossovers in the US increased by 5.6 percent last year, so the XT4 should have an almost immediate impact. The XT4 will not only help Cadillac in the US but also in China, which just so happens to be the brand’s biggest market. The XT4 shares a platform with the current Chevrolet Malibu sedan, and Motor Trend claims both vehicles will be built alongside each other at GM’s assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas. The XT4 is also the start of a new Cadillac product offensive that will see five major vehicles launched starting next month through the end of 2020. As we were told last month by a Cadillac spokesman, Detroit was its “last quiet show for a while.”

Cadillac Super Cruise Is Coming To A Whole Lot More Vehicles

Super Cruise won't be exclusive to the Cadillac CT6 for much longer.

Just about every major automaker is working on its own autonomous driving systems, but few are as advanced as Cadillac's Super Cruise. And now it's set to roll out across a much broader array of vehicles. One of the most comprehensive systems on the market, Super Cruise combines LiDAR, highly precise GPS, and driver-attention systems into one package that allows drivers to cruise the highway – over 130,000 miles of it across the United States and Canada – without their hands on the wheel.

The system is currently available on the flagship Cadillac CT6, but at the Intelligent Transportation Society conference in Detroit on Wednesday, GM's product-planning chief Mark Reuss announced that the company will expand the availability of Super Cruise to every Cadillac model starting in 2020 – less than two years from now.

What's more is that after 2020, Super Cruise will be offered on other GM products as well – not just those bearing the Cadillac crest. And the automaker is also working to implement V2X communications on an as-yet undisclosed "high-volume" Cadillac crossover by 2023, enabling it to network not only with other vehicles, but with infrastructure and other roadway users as well. “The expansion of Super Cruise and V2X communications technology demonstrates Cadillac’s commitment to innovation, and to making customers’ lives better,” said Reuss. “GM is just as committed to ushering in a new era of personal transportation, and technologies like these will enable it.”
