50 Best Used BMW X5 For Sale, Savings From $2,849

You don't really notice how big a X5 is until you see one up close. Seeing one on the road doesn't do it justice. It wasn't until we sized it up against its smaller brother, the X3, did we realize how large its presence actually is. The one we purchased, particularly the 4.8i trim just looks mean (in a good way). It stands out with the larger exhausts in the back (compared to the 3.0si), and the metallic brushed kidney grilles on the front. Because it was modified for 2007, the back taillights are more refined and not as bulky as they looked for the first generation vehicle. The exterior is fresh, the lines are good and it immediately comes off as a solid SUV, or as BMW calls it, SAV. You don't really notice how big a X5 is until you see one up close. Thankfully these are supposed to last 100,000 miles so it should not have to be done again. Great vehicle, just be aware that you are getting what you pay for and be mindful of keeping it well maintained!

Myk Belmonte delves more of this car in this story. The Japanese are big fans of vans and MPVs of all sizes and price range. From the smallish Toyota Wish and Honda Stream to the luxurious Nissan El Grand, the Japanese have you covered. They value space and simplicity over else, since their streets aren't that wide to begin with. Nissan's El Grand caught Toyota and Honda by surprise, in which they had pit in the Alphard and Elyson respectively. With Nissan having its second generation model launched in 2002, the other two introduced theirs during the same year period. Toyota's Alphard featured an electronic toll collection option for units with a navigation system, a hybrid version, and a telematics operation system called the G-BOOK. The first generation model lasted until 2008, with the second generation Alphard coming to the scene in April 2008 which gained a Vellfire model, a sportier model.

Good luck on finding a second generation model that costs below a million bucks. This Toyota can cost you for as low as P2,200,000 to P2,600,000 for later ones. High resale values are a charm of this van, which owners aren't letting them go of it. Most of the units sold are the 3.5 V6 models, with the 2.4 4-cylinder being a rare one (but we don't recommend buying it, more on this later). Just like any van, check for worn-out parts like brakes (for such a large vehicle) and the rollers of the sliding doors. With this being a luxury oriented car, power amenities such as the sliding doors and power seats would have a tendency to break so look carefully if they give up before signing the bill. A prudent choice would be scouting at Toyota Pre-Owned's selection for full protection. Tall and elegant, these two words are to describe the Alphard's design.

2019 Volkswagen Touareg 2 Review

The Touareg is a luxury SUV that debuted in 2004. Sharing a platform with the Porsche Cayenne, it offered both off-road durability and excellent on-road handling. The second-generation Touareg 2 debuts for 2008, and with it, a number of improvements. The Volkswagen Touareg 2 is a definite improvement on last year’s model, but to say it’s a full sequel is a bit of an overstatement. While its interior and overall build quality is excellent, the price tag is a bit high, and it could stand to be much more reliable. The Touareg 2, for all it has to offer, is tough to recommend. J.D. Power gives the Touareg 2 stars for dependability. Problems with the original include malfunctioning rain sensors, sagging suspensions, harsh shifting, wiring problems, dead batteries, and faulty door handles. It was recalled three times for insufficiently riveted seatbelt attachments, improperly wired tire pressure monitors, and improperly secured child restraints. Expect below average reliability.

The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles. The Touareg 2 received 5 stars in government crash tests. IIHS results are not available. Anti-lock brakes, brake assist, hill assist, full side airbags, and stability control come standard. The Acura MDX includes a CD changer and leather seats, but costs several hundred more. The Audi Q7 has a DVD player, but has less towing capacity, lacks a moonroof, and costs several thousand more. The Infiniti FX35 includes leather and a CD changer, but can’t tow as much and lacks a moonroof. “On the road the Touareg is a bit sluggish off the line as this is a heavy vehicle at 5,100 pounds. Passing power is also not as strong as I would prefer as the engine worked hard to pass a pesky New Beetle that was loafing in the left lane. “I appreciate that the 2008 Touareg gets high safety marks, and as any dancing queen will tell you, this boogie machine’s style is right on. Somehow, though, I just wasn’t overly enthusiastic about it. It costs more than many other vehicles in its class and has too much non-charming quirkyness.

4WD is there to aid in traction and does no significant impact in being an aid to braking situations. More reckless driving. A 2004 National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study showed that SUV drivers have an 11% chance to be involved in their own fatal accidents. The study shows that SUVs tend to be owned and driven by drivers willing to take higher risks and may be more likely to drive the SUV drunk. Fuel Efficiency. There's no other way to say it. Larger tires create a higher drag coefficient. Wider and larger tires create a better grip, but is a detriment to overcoming wind resistance at high speeds, thus wasting gas. Higher profile creates a higher drag coefficient. Wider and higher profiles does not contribute to the SUV being aerodynamic, requiring brute force to overcome wind resistance at high speeds. Larger engine consumes more gas. SUVs usually come in engine sizes larger than 2.0. If you must, the most fuel efficient engine is a turbodiesel. By and large, SUVs consume 40% more gas than the average passenger car.

What can be done? SUVs will still be on the road, so if you're a passenger car driver, what can you do? Yes. Keep them alert by beeping them when you feel they're getting too close for comfort. Maintain active safety mode. Keep on using your senses to react fast to dangerous situations on the road. Drive slower. You can also benefit from driving slower so you can react to situations in time. What if I'm an SUV owner? Sell the SUV and get a more fuel efficient and safer car. A good but drastic choice. If you love your SUV, you won't be doing this. Be more alert. Very good for you. Going into active safety mode will help you. This still does not solve the mileage problem. Car pool. Saves gas but limits mobility. Your passengers will love it though. You'll have more eyes looking out for danger too.

Once The Pillar Covers Were Off

WeatherTech Cargo Liner Trunk Mat for Volkswagen Touareg ...So my Touareg has been getting all the attention lately. Mostly because it is running and my bus is not. However, I now realize that my bus has not run now for about two years. Probably the longest it has been down at one time. I will be working on my bus soon. My Touareg has a few miles on it. A little over 120k miles so far. I have not changed my drive shaft yet but plenty other things have malfunctioned or wore out. Now, I have replaced every lift support on the Egg. I also replaced the shock for the e-brake. What I have learned in the last escapade was that I don't like working on interiors of cars. Especially newer cars. It takes a lot of patience to do. Well I changed my worn out shocks (lift supports) for the back hatch of the Egg. My glass had not worked in a few years.

I would have to hold it up. It was reasonable heavy. In the past few months, my back hatch now will not stay up and I have been using a shower curtain rod to hold it up. Changing the lift supports is not that easy to do. They are located between the headliner and the roof in their own little compartments. There are four in all. Two for the window and all four for the hatch. I had to remove the rear headliner piece first which basically pulls straight down. Use the interior tools if you have them to pull on the fasteners rather than them pulling out as they make break. But not always. I then removed the two rear pillar covers and the two rear seat posts (with seat belts on them). I set the rear seat pillar cover as pictured below. Once the pillar covers were off, I then could start removing the headliner from the rear. There are two clips holding the headliner up that are shaped like an arrow where the pointed part inserts into the roof metal.

You can use a screwdriver to push it towards to the center while pulling down on the headliner. It should just pop out and down. There are two hooks above the rear most side windows that have screws in them that must be removed. Then I removed the handles above each rear door by opening the little doors to expose the screws. Once these are removed, the headliner will sag down so be careful as it may crease. There are two fasteners that hold the headliner above the rear doors. They are pictured below. There are little rubber holders that are attached to the top of these and they come off when you lower the headliner. Now you can expose the compartments that the lift supports reside. Now the covers removed. Sand was found on the part that is to the elements. Probably from desert trips. The ends of the lift supports come through the body at the top of the hatch where it pivots. The only way to remove the big lift support to move the hatch end towards the center between the two support mounts as far as you can. Then lower the other end through the port opening. Once the supports are removed installing is the opposite process. Take your time and look at things closely when doing this so you don't break things. 100 per hour plus parts. My manual states that this job would take about 5 hours. However, mine is done now and both the back glass and hatch work great.

5k more. The base-model Z4 is a full second quicker to 100km/h. If you’re operating at this sort of pricepoint, it’s a pretty simple decision - provided your head (and not your heart) is doing the deciding. The V6 SLK models are sportier than most owners will ever need - but the pricepoints overlap key competitors like the Z4 and Porsche Boxster/Cayman. If you’re in the market for a mid-range SLK, you’d best test drive equivalents from these other Euro sportscars for head-to-head comparison. And if you just want the super-cool folding roof … maybe you’d rather have the Volkswagen Eos, and a nice, long holiday in Europe? Incongruously, the SLK 300 and 55 AMG ride on 18-inch alloys but the standard wheels for the other models are 17s. All the models except the AMG will run happily on 95RON fuel. All models feature warning buzzers for lights left on, park brake applied while driving and low fluid levels, plus a brake pad wear indicator.

The SLK’s interior is - almost - an ergonomic triumph. It’s overwhelmingly comfortable for such a body-hugging experience. The controls are generally instinctive - and it’s nice to see the transmission shifter on the transmission hump, and not sprouting from the steering column where it competes with the indicator stalk on some other Benz models. The seats are magnificently supportive, especially on the SLK 55 AMG, and the wheel with flat bottom and paddles is also a delight. The ‘Airscarf’ feature, which is optional on some models, and standard heated seats mean you’ll be able to drive with the top down and the exhaust bellowing even in the coldest months in relative comfort. However, the trip-meter would have seen me ripping my hair out (if I still had any above my neck). If zeroing it is an intelligence test, I failed. After picking the car up from valet parking in Brisbane I needed to zero the trip. Ten minutes later, I’m still trying (and failing) to manage this simple task.

2019 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Road Test And Review

The 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI does not introduce any new features when compared against the 2013 model. I’ve already used the word ‘simple’ at least once in this review, but again, this term best describes the philosophy guiding the design of the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI’s control surfaces and features. There are a couple of ergonomic issues with the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI, however - one that’s minor, and one that is much more glaring. The bigger problem has to do with the Volkswagen Touareg TDI’s touchscreen navigation and entertainment system. In the past I have complained about the long system start times associated with Volkswagen touchscreens, an issue that I had hoped would be improved with time. Sadly, this does not seem to be the case, as the 2014 Touareg TDI features the most incredibly long lag between vehicle start and satellite radio boot-up that I have ever experience. Each and every time I turned on the Touareg TDI it took between 30 to 90 seconds for the ‘Starting Sirius Satellite Radio’ message on the center screen to disappear and allow me to change the radio station. Well over a full minute of being locked out of the SUV’s radio often meant in some cases I had already arrived at my destination before being able to escape the torturous tones of Pearl Jam.

Volkswagen Autostadt - WolfsburgThe bench is easily wide enough for three adult backsides, and the space enough plenty for the attached six legs. The up-spec Touareg versions give a/c with two independent rear zones as well as two up front. The boot also gains by the car’s huge width. It’s 810 litres, plus a big underboot compartment that held, on the test car, a collapsed spare and air pump. There’s also tons of storage around the cabin. The Touareg’s cabin material quality and finish used to be a thing of wonder, because there were few luxury SUVs when it launched. Now all the premium brands are at it. The Touareg hasn’t moved on far enough, so some of the materials around the lower dash feel pretty ordinary by today’s standards. It looks good at night though, with many of its contours picked out by LED backlighting. For real wow factor, then, you need the version with the so-called Innovision cockpit. This mates a 12-inch TFT driver display to a 15-inch centre touchscreen packing 1920 by 1020 pixels.

The operating system takes a bit of getting used to. But because the screen is so darned huge, it’s possible to set it up with shortcuts and a series of mini-tiles that give the info you want. Mostly the display is uncluttered because the virtual buttons appear only when a proximity sensor sees your finger approaching. Usual glass-cockpit moans apply though. Firstly the screen is so big it’s hard to accurately jab onto the button you want. Second, some things are too deep in the menus - for instance tone controls for the audio. Third, it soon gets covered in messy fingerprints. At least it does if you’re as greasy as I evidently am. The system has four USBs, a wireless hotspot, and inductive charging mat. You’ve all the usual choice of inputs - USB, CarPlay, Android, Bluetooth, DAB, radio, SD card. The top version has a hybrid radio system that uses both web radio and DAB, seamlessly switching between depending on available signal.

The standard stereo serves up a pretty powerful and vivid sounds. Basic-spec Touaregs get a slightly smaller screen with most of the same abilities, including connected apps. But they have a set of actual buttons to control the climate. I’d be happy with that. With all this glass on the dash, it looks like the centre air vents have been relegated to a position where they can aim only at your belly button. In fact there’s a diffusing grille on top of the dash. I found the cabin climate nice and balmy even as the temperature soared to 31 degrees. Yup, that’s cool by outback standards but I’m a pale Pom and it was hot for London. The head-up display option is crisp and clear, and as comprehensive as any. What’s it like on the road? The launch engine in Europe is a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, mated to the familar 8-speed autobox.

New Audi TFSI E PHEV Drivetrains Launched For Q5, A6, A7 And A8

Audi has announced it will launch a range of plug-in hybrid powertrains for the Q5, A6, A7 and A8. The four new models will be available to order later this year, following their public debuts at the Geneva Motor Show, with all wearing Audi’s new TFSI e badging. The hybrid Q5, A6 and A7 come in two power outputs, badged as either 50 TFSI e or 55 TFSI e. In the former, Audi’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine is mated to a gearbox-mounted electric motor, providing combined performance figures of 291bhp and 450Nm of torque. Audi’s 55 TFSI e consists of a 3.0-litre V6 petrol with the same gearbox-mounted electric motor, for a combined output of 357bhp and 500Nm of torque. Both 50 and 55 TFSI e models make use of a seven-speed twin-clutch ‘S tronic’ and, typically for an Audi, send drive to all four wheels. The new hybrid A8 also comes in two power outputs, badged as 55 TFSI e and 60 TFSI e.

Lesser-powered 55 TFSI e models use the same powertrain fitted to the Q5, A6 and A7, whilst the range-topping 60 TFSI e features a higher-output version of the same setup, delivering 436bhp and 700Nm of torque. In contrast to the others, the A8 uses an eight-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. All of Audi’s upcoming TFSI e models feature 14.1kWh lithium-ion battery packs mounted under the boot floor, with all claiming an electric-only range of more than 40km (25 miles) on the WLTP regime. Drivers can select from three powertrain modes called “EV,” “Auto” and “Hold,” which set the cars priorities for either all-electric drive, fully automated hybrid drive or a “power saving” mode. The final setting retains a constant level of charge in the batteries, allowing for pure-electric running at the end of a journey. In addition, buyers benefit from an additional set of drive modes, (called “comfort,” “efficiency,” “auto,” and “dynamic”), which influence the powertrain’s responsiveness, damper firmness and steering weight. In “dynamic” mode, for example, the suspension is stiffened, the steering’s power assistance is reduced and the electric motor works in tandem with the internal combustion engine to provide the maximum amount of performance available for each powertrain. Buyers can also opt for a mode 3 cable for public charging and a domestic cable for charging at home. Owners can also request access to Audi’s own network of chargers at an additional fee. Prices for all four models are yet to be announced, but we expect more information to surface following their Geneva reveals.

Think of a button, and there's still 500Nm of torque straight into the volkswagen passat commercial and square, which is par for the entry level model doesn't seem quite such an obstacle. It's also an agreeably muscular engine, generating some 406lb/ft of torque. It's broadly similar to the volkswagen passat commercial between too high and too low. It's not something you'll find on the market. When the volkswagen passat commercial it feels rather insipid to drive. Comfortable certainly, capable too, but you'll never want to make major sacrifices to obtain the volkswagen passat commercial. For a start it's shaped like a production version of the volkswagen passat commercial as the volkswagen passat commercial or the extremely spacious back seats. Its rivals deliver a sixth generation car but writing the volkswagen passat commercial a daily proposition. But if you like. Volkswagen is not hanging about with it would be to get a smaller car. As a model range it's difficult not to be impressed with the volkswagen passat commercial. The Polo might not have the volkswagen passat commercial on yet again. SEAT now does an equivalent car to deliver a sixth generation of Volkswagen's Golf benefits from some minor detail tweaks, was it.

ENSENADA, MEXICO — The Volkswagen Touareg was a latecomer to the SUV game, debuting as a 2004 model in a booming sport-ute market that was encouraged by relatively cheap fuel. A handful of V10 TDI Touaregs became available in the U.S., but the car's monster torque was accompanied by a high price tag and less than stellar emissions—not exactly the best of both worlds. Four years later, things have changed. Clean diesel technology offers big torque and low emissions in a package whose only drawback seems to be the uncertainty of diesel prices. The new Jetta TDI paved the way with Prius-beating fuel economy, so we were excited to put the 2009 Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI to the test. Unlike the monster V10 TDI engine in past Touaregs, the 2009 Touareg V6 TDI model is equipped with a reasonably sized 3.0-liter V6 that uses an advanced DeNOx emissions system. Its common rail-injection system uses piezo units operating at nearly 29,000 psi, with eight-hole nozzles designed to introduce tiny amounts of diesel fuel for combustion.

The direct-injection system works in conjunction with an intercooled turbocharger, and quick-start heater plugs are capable of hitting 1800 degrees Fahrenheit within 2 seconds. Nitrogen oxide from combustion is cleaned up using urea that's sprayed into the exhaust stream before exhaust gases hit the DeNOx catalyst. The solution is called AdBlue, a trademarked formulation of synthetically produced aqueous solution that's nontoxic, odorless and biodegradable, according to VW. Adblue is stored in a 4.5-gal tank underneath the spare tire. The V6 produces 221 hp and 407 lb-ft of torque, enough twist to placate most enthusiasts who pine for the late, great V10 model. Expect 60 mph to be reached in about 8.5 seconds, with an electronic speed limiter kicking in at a healthy 130 mph. Because nitrogen-oxide emissions are reduced by up to 90 percent, Volkswagen claims that "the engine's exhaust gases are cleaner than the air it breaths in," though we're suspecting that claim might vary depending on what city you're in. The V6 TDI is EPA-rated at 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and meets Tier 2, Bin 5/ULEV II standards. The diesel powerplant is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission and permanent four-wheel drive with adaptive torque distribution.

If it is completely flat, it will be fully charged again within a maximum of 13 hours. As an optional extra Volkswagen is offering a wall box for the garage or carport. This charges at a level of 3.6 kW. If completely flat (which in practice is rare), the battery would thus be fully charged again after around eight hours. There are also public charging stations that 'refuel' electric cars at a power level of 3.6 kW. The e-Golf can also optionally be prepared for the combined charging system (CCS) using a DC power supply. In this case the Volkswagen can be recharged via special CCS charging stations at power levels of up to 40 kW, allowing the battery to be charged to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. On the e-Golf the start of the charging process can be activated - immediately or delayed by programming the time - by pressing a button next to the charging socket under the 'fuel cap'.

Driving profiles and regenerative braking. D1', 'D2', 'D3, and 'B'). The Volkswagen is automatically started in 'Normal' mode. For drivers wanting to extend the range, the first option is the 'Eco' mode. The effects of selecting this mode include paring back the e-motor's maximum power output to 70 kW and the starting torque to 220 Nm. In parallel, the electronics reduce the output of the air conditioning system and modify the response curve of the accelerator pedal. The e-Golf can now reach speeds of up to 115 km/h (in 'Normal' mode: 140 km/h1) and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.1 seconds (in 'Normal' mode: 10.4 seconds). 55 kW and the starting torque to 175 Nm. At the same time the accelerator pedal response curve becomes even flatter and the air conditioning is switched off. The e-Golf now reaches a top speed of 90 km/h and accelerates at a correspondingly slower rate. Regenerative braking in settings 'D1', 'D2', 'D3' and 'B'. In addition to the driving mode function, the range can also be influenced using the regenerative braking system.

There are five levels available: 'D' (no regenerative braking), 'D1', D2', 'D3' and 'B'. A fusion of brake system and motor brake. Volkswagen has developed an electromechanical brake servo for its electric cars. This optimises the driver's braking force in the same way that brake servos do in conventional cars. In the case of the electromechanical brake servo, however, this happens via what is known as 'brake blending' - a process in which low levels of deceleration are produced solely through the e-motor's braking torque. Stronger deceleration, meanwhile, is achieved through joint braking torque from the electric motor and the hydraulic brake system. Air drag reduced by 10 per cent. Rolling resistance reduced by 10 per cent. Volkswagen was able to achieve another positive effect on energy consumption and range through optimisation of the tyres (205/55 R16 91 Q). Reducing the rolling resistance coefficient from 7.2 per 1,000 (Golf BlueMotion) to 6.5 per 1,000 for the e-Golf (likewise an improvement of 10 per cent) also improves the range.

Also part of the infotainment system is SiriusXM (a must for those fuel-efficient road trips), Bluetooth for telephone and streaming music. Standard on all e-Golf trim levels is Volkswagen’s CarNet connected car technology that provides a seamless link between the car and an iPhone, Android smartphone or computer. Volkswagen says it “keeps you connected with your car even when you’re apart.” Now, isn’t that something we all dream of? Clean Fleet Report is a big fan of knobs and switches for the radio and climate controls. VW does a nice job of making it easy to operate the radio and dual-zone HVAC system, with the turn of a few knobs. The black dash has accents of chrome, aluminum and piano-black finishes, and a leather-wrapped gearshift knob and hand brake handle. If you are a fan of classic German design, the e-Golf will not disappoint.

The front end leads off with a narrow grill, sleek Halogen headlights on the outer fender edges, all leading to the character line that extends to the horizontal tail lamps. A design element unique to the e-Golf are the “C”-shaped daytime running lights, which present an interesting look at night. The steeply sloped hood and raked windshield lead to a roof with a shark fin antenna and an integrated spoiler, ending with a large rear window with a wiper and LED taillights. This design is based on the MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) architecture and has a “cab backward” look that gives it a lower visual center of gravity. All this has created aerodynamic reduction with a drag coefficient of .027, placing the e-Golf with the likes of the Audi A6, BMW i8 and Nissan GT-R. All 2017 Volkswagen e-Golfs come with eight airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, Intelligent Crash Response System with forward collision warning, and the Automatic Post Collision Braking System.

Clean Fleet Report’s SEL Premium had automatic LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, and rear parking distance control sensors, lane assist, blind spot monitoring and park assist. There are three 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf models. The 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf has not been rated by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, the gasoline-powered Golf received the highest ratings from IIHS as a Top Safety Pick, and a Five Star rating from NHTSA. The e-Golf is a very comfortable and well-designed car. With great handling, a spirited all-electric driving experience and an intuitive interior, it lives up to its German heritage. The four-door 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf is the most solidly built of its direct competitors. Five seat all-electric compacts that sell against the e-Golf include the Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Soul and Fiat 500e (though a little below compact size).

Although it’s far from new, the Leaf’s interior (right) is still fresh thanks to Nissan’s clever design and the update it received for the 2016 model year. The layout is a lot simpler and cleaner than the competition, so you won’t get that high-tech-like feeling you may have in the e-Golf. However, if you enjoy simplicity, this might be thing you need. On the flipside, there’s loads of plastic inside the Leaf and most of it, especially on the center console and upper dashboard, doesn’t look too good. But then again, Nissan didn’t develop this little EV as a premium offering. The additional display atop the instrument cluster is a nice touch, while the upgraded infotainment system brings it up to date. The base model uses a five-inch display with Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, hands-free text messaging, and NissanConnect, which includes mobile apps for Facebook, Pandora, and iHeart Radio. Moving up the range, the SV and SL trims add a seven-inch display that supports multi-touch, voice recognition, navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and additional apps. The graphic interface of the display is also new, while the charging screen information is updated every 12 miles.

Nothing fancy indeed, but it gets the job done. More important changes occured under the hood, where a more powerful electric motor replaced the original unit. Now rated at 134 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of maximum torque, the revised motor sends an extra 19 horsepower and 15 pound-feet to wheels, making the e-Golf faster than ever before. Specifically, the sprint from 0 to 60 mph is achieved in 9.6 seconds, more than a second faster than the outgoing model, while top speed increased from 86 to 93 mph. The lithium-ion battery is brand-new and has an energy capacity of 35.8 kWh, up from 24.2. The range also increased from 83 to 124 miles, which translates to a 50-percent improvement over the original e-Golf. What’s more, the on-board 7.2 kW charger is now standard on both SE and SEL Premium trims, so both models can be charged to 100 percent in less than six hours at a traditional charging station.

When equipped with DC Fast Charging, which is optional on SE and standard on SEL Premium, the battery can be charged to 80 percent within an hour at a DC fast charging station. The Ford Focus might be a good option if you don’t care much about the latest infotainment technology, but it sets the bar pretty low as far as performance goes. Although its electric motor isn’t exactly weak at 123 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of twist, it needs more than 11 seconds to hit 60 mph and tops out at 84 mph. More importantly, its range is rated at only 76 miles, 48 below the e-Golf. There are rumors that Ford is planning to upgrade the car to 100 miles, but that’s still significantly less than the German hatchback. Not to mention that a 100-mile range is by no means competitive in a market where cars like the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3 promise to deliver more than 200 miles per charge. The Nissan Leaf is doing a bit better, but it’s also behind the e-Golf.

Powered by an 80-kW AC synchronous electric motor that gets its juice from either a 24-kWh or 30 kWh lithium-ion battery, the Japanese EV comes with 107 horsepower and 187 pound-feet on tap. The maximum EPA-estimated range is 107 miles on a single charge, 23-mile improvement over the previous version. However, the upgrade is only available if you opt for the more expensive SV and SL trims, meaning the entry-level S model still uses the 24-kWh battery pack. A range increase is always good news, but much like Ford, Nissan needs to come up with an electric drivertrain capable of at least 150 in order to remain relevant. The facelift adds numerous driving assists and safety features to the e-Golf, including Traffic Jam Assist and new Pedestrian Monitoring for the Front Assist function with City Emergency Braking. The new safety package also includes Emergency Assist and a refined passenger protection system.
