You can't buy a Golf GTD at the moment. Or rather you can't order one. The model is a victim of the more stringent WLTP standards, and, to a lesser extent, the fallout from Dieselgate. Volkswagen will wait for the Mk8 to reintroduce a Golf with a more powerful oil-burner - a not inconvenient delay when you consider the amount of dust there is left to settle. The model's abrupt relocation to the back-burner is symptomatic of the wider backlash against diesel. Not so very long ago it could claim to be one of the most popular variants of one of the most popular hatchbacks in the country. Its meteoric rise to favoured status - much like its recent downfall - mirrored the dramatic escalation of the diesel-powered car market in Europe. But it was not a new idea. A Mk2 followed, and a Mk3, but the UK derv market a the time was deemed too shallow to bother importing the idea of a go-faster badge. It deepened in subsequent years, although the Mk4 and 5 still loitered under the 'GT' designation in diesel format.





The rebirth finally came in 2009 with the Mk6 and a distinct 170hp 2.0-litre unit that furnished the GTD with the same 258lb ft of torque that Golf R owners were privy to. Unsurprisingly, this proved manna from heaven for a generation of business users enthralled with the idea of getting maximum forward bang for the lowest CO2 buck. Naturally its success was part founded on the notion of edgier performance, though the idea didn't necessarily earn it much respect among diehard hot hatch fans. When all was said and done, the diesel engine remained - a lesser, dirtier and drabber thing than any one of half a dozen petrol-powered units available elsewhere. The GTD could move you along fast enough, sure - but move you? No. It is intended to stir common sense, not the soul. Consequently, the 2.0-litre motor beneath - a derivative of the stock EA189 unit slap bang at the centre of the Dieselgate scandal - has always been halfway between hero and villain.





Back in the 'not so long ago', a no lesser figure than Mike Cross, Jaguar's Chief Engineer, told PH that he'd driven a current Golf GTD for reasons not connected to work and thought it exceptionally good. And, if you play to its strengths, it's easy enough to see what he was talking about. Like, for example, if you need to drive from Reigate in Surrey to Innsbruck in Austria. In one sitting. And then come back again. Being able to do 750km to a tank is a useful commodity against such a large backdrop; Innsbruck being (roughly speaking) about 1,100km from Calais. Which means you fill up once. The Golf, through France and Belgium at a respectful 130km/h, nudges 52mpg. And even with Germany traversed at German speeds, the trip computer claims 47.1mpg for the outward journey. With French tolls suffered all the way from Strasbourg, 49.8mpg. The cost?





A large McDonalds bill less than 鈧?00 in fuel. About the same as EasyJet quoted for two return tickets. Then there is that engine. More often than not, it feels neither fast or slow. The GTD is endowed instead with an oily sort of expediency, one that never quite pins the ears back or quickens the pulse, but leaves you no time to dwell on either drawback because it's thrusting you so relentlessly onward. And because it's all hooked up to the running gear of the world's most accommodating hot hatch, you drive virtually everywhere in a perpetual state of brisk - which, in the real world, more often than not, is just dandy. Perhaps that's no great loss. It always was not quite one thing or the other. But the concept was no more half baked than the petrol-electric hybrids that will likely replace it down the road. Moreover, it - and several other cars like it - did at least pull off one legitimate GTI-style trick: they successfully repackaged and democratised some of the performance from the diesel-drinking class above.

Volkswagen also received high marks for the GTI (second in the Compact Sporty Car class); Tiguan (second in Compact Crossover SUV); Touareg (second in Midsize Premium Crossover SUV); and Golf (second in Compact Car). The Beetle and the Jetta placed fourth and tied for fifth respectively in the Compact Car class, giving VW three cars in the top five in this highly competitive segment. Year-on-year, Volkswagen improved its mean index score by 14 points, continuing to outpace the non-premium average, and rose one place to 13th place overall in the Study. Volkswagen customers cited fuel economy, reliability, and quality of workmanship as key strengths for the brand鈥檚 vehicles. Other top purchase drivers included interior comfort, exterior styling, performance, safety, and advanced technology.





This 2003 Volkswagen GTI 20th Anniversary Edition is number 2,706 of 4,000 produced for the US market. It is painted in Black Magic Pearl over a black cloth interior and is powered by a turbocharged 1.8-liter inline-four paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The seller acquired the car a year ago and has added 16k of the 89k miles shown on the odometer. Modifications include BBS RC wheels with recently installed Firestone tires, H&R coil-overs with front and rear sway bars, Black Forest Industries shift knob and dogbone mount, AEM air intake, Audi red top coils, and glass headlight lenses. This Mk IV GTI is now offered with a Carfax report, service records, and a clean California title in the seller鈥檚 name. This model marked the 20th anniversary of the GTI鈥檚 1983 introduction to the North American market. Nearly half of the special-edition cars were finished in this example鈥檚 Black Magic Pearl with Votex front, rear, and side skirts along with a hatch spoiler.





The seller reports that the front and rear bumpers were scratched and fitted with factory replacements in November 2013, and the accompanying Carfax report notes damage to the front and rear of the car at that time. The front GTI grille badge was removed, and smoked turn-signal lights replace the factory amber units. The interior features brushed-aluminum accents, a perforated leather steering wheel, and a Black Forest Industries shift knob. Approximately 89k miles are shown on the digital gauge cluster, with 16k being added by the seller over the past year. The equalizer knobs on the factory Monsoon head unit are noted as loose. Front and rear cloth Recaro seats were standard on 20th Anniversary Edition GTIs. The turbocharged 1.8-liter inline-four produced 180 horsepower when new and sends power to the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. A timing belt service was completed in November 2015, and service in March 2019 included an oil change and new engine mounts. An AEM cold air intake system replaces the factory air box, and the car passed a California smog check as recently as March 2018. Volkswagen has announced that a new limited edition Passat R-Line estate will debut at this year鈥檚 Geneva Motor Show. Production will be restricted to just 2,000 units when it reaches the European market in May, fielding a choice of two engines and a range of R-Line design tweaks and trims. Buyers will be able to choose from either a 233bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel or a 264bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Both powertrains are mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission and Volkswagen鈥檚 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. Exterior updates for the new Passat R-Line estate include a set of gloss black 19-inch alloy wheels, a new rear diffuser, new LED Matrix headlights, black mirror caps, a black roof and smoked LED tail lights. Each model will be finished in Volkswagen鈥檚 鈥淢oonstone Grey鈥?paint. The most significant technology update for the Passat R-Line is the addition of Volkswagen鈥檚 new Travel Assist system. This semi-autonomous driving mode allows the car to assume control of its own steering, brakes, and throttle at speeds up to 130mph, providing the driver鈥檚 hands are on the wheel. It uses the car鈥檚 existing safety technology (such as Front Assist for detecting obstacles and Park Assist for steering control) to monitor the road. Whether or not the Passat R-Line estate will make it to the UK is yet to be confirmed. Crossovers and SUVs might be the hot-ticket item these days, but sedans still hold an extremely important part in the automotive landscape. Mid-size sedans, especially, continue to post impressive sales numbers. Back for the 2011 model year, Volkswagen decided it needed a bigger slice of the American pie, so it introduced a version of its popular Passat build especially for the U.S. A refresh for 2016 brought sharpened body lines, a more chiseled face, and a slightly reworked interior. Now, a year later, the 2017 Passat soldiers on with nary a change. But, is this mid-size sedan got what it takes to rival the segment stalwarts, namely the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord? To find out, I recently spent three weeks behind the wheel of a Passat R-Line. What鈥檚 the R-Line, you ask? It boils down to a dolled-up version of the base Passat. It comes with larger wheels, a more up-scale front fascia, and the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Better yet, the swankier trim doesn鈥檛 come with a massive price tag. 23,875. And thanks to its 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and FWD, it鈥檚 frugal at the pump, too, returning an EPA-estimated 34 mpg on the highway. Nevertheless, both the Camry and Accord are completely new for 2018 and will be stiff competition for this Tennessee-built car with German roots.





However, while the Opel Mokka X, Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur, Mazda CX-3, and the Toyota C-HR are significantly less powerful, the Nissan Juke and the Hyundai Kona come closer in the horsepower department. Seven years old as of 2018, the Nissan Juke is getting a little long in a tooth, and it was already replaced by the Kicks in North America. The funky-looking crossover continues unchanged in Europe, and although it鈥檚 not yet clear whether it will get to live into a new generation, the mini SUV remains popular in several markets. While its looks are definitely unique, the Juke lacks the premium-like interior it needs to compete against the T-Roc. It鈥檚 also inferior when it comes to output, with the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine delivering n more than 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The Kona is a brand-new mini SUV that was launched in South Korea in 2017. Now available in Europe too, it鈥檚 based on the Hyundai i20, and it also shares underpinnings with the Kia Stonic. Also sporting a rather funky design compared to the Juke, it鈥檚 a better option against the T-Roc thanks to its modern interior and comprehensive tech package. However, much like the Juke, it doesn鈥檛 have a performance engine to tackle the GTI-spec VW. The most powerful unit is a turbocharged, 1.6-liter four-cylinder that delivers 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Whether Hyundai鈥檚 N division will create a more powerful option remains unknown, but the Kona is a good option only if you鈥檙e not looking for more than 200 horsepower and a 0-to-62 mph sprint that takes less than seven seconds. The T-Roc GTI has been rumored for quite a few months now, but Volkswagen has yet to confirm it officially. Truth be told, the Germans don鈥檛 really need such a model, since there鈥檚 no competition to steal their market, but the T-Roc GTI would give them a unique position in this niche. I鈥檓 actually quite surprised that Volkswagen has yet to expand the GTI badge beyond the Golf and the Polo, but I鈥檓 pretty sure this will happen very soon. And the T-Roc is a very likely candidate as it鈥檚 smaller and lighter than all the other SUVs.





The Volkswagen GLI has always been fun. Lack of fun was never the issue. But it鈥檚 suffered from two problems, one long-running and one more recent. The first is that the more practical GTI hatchback exists, making the GLI a permanent also-ran. And the second is that, being a Jetta underneath, the last GLI rode on a dated, older platform when the rest of the VW world moved on to that sweet MQB goodness. Meet the all-new 2019 Jetta GLI, which has more power than ever and takes care of one of those issues. The new GLI was unveiled today at the Chicago Auto Show, which is somehow more newsier than the snoozefest that was the Detroit Auto Show in January. As with the new Jetta, which we rather like, the new GLI does in fact ride on the up-to-date MQB platform, arguably the best small car architecture in the world at present. With a bevy of tech, racier looks and 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque from the 2.0-liter turbo four, it sounds like a fun little sedan. You can鈥檛 go wrong either way!

True to the 911 tradition, the distinctive Porsche design language exudes power and elegance. Principle among the innovative steps forwards is the all-new, lightweight body, featuring intelligent aluminium-steel composite construction. It is responsible for a significant proportion of the vehicle weight reduction of up to 45 kg.





The body structure also delivers significantly greater rigidity, and aerodynamic optimisation - including a wider, variably extending rear spoiler - has reduced the lift generated by the new 911 Carrera while retaining an impressive overall drag factor. That the new 911 offers better acceleration in a straight line goes without saying, but it also offers top performance at an unprecedented level across the entire dynamic repertoire. In addition to the longer wheelbase, the greater agility, precision and driving stability are based, among other things, on the wider front track, a new rear axle and new electro-mechanical power steering. Depending on the model, there are other standard or optional active control systems available as well that further enhance the driving dynamics. The familiar athletic appearance of the 911 is given further dynamism with a 100mm longer wheelbase, reduced height, and up to 20-inch diameter alloy wheels. At the same time, the typically compact exterior dimensions have been retained. Seen from the front, the eye is drawn to the trademark wide-arched wings, emphasising the wider front track and making the new 911 Carrera models adopt a particularly sporting stance on the road.





The redesigned exterior mirrors are now mounted on the upper edge of the door and not as before on the mirror triangle. Not only is this aerodynamically advantageous, it also emphasises the new design line and visual impression of width. To complement the modern exterior, the Porsche designers created an interior style which takes its cue from that of the Porsche Carrera GT. Setting the standard in its class, as it has for generations, the new Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S raise the performance and efficiency standard to new levels. Fuel consumption and emissions of all versions are up to 16 per cent lower compared with its predecessors. The new electro-mechanical power steering system offers not only the typical precision and feedback expected of a Porsche, but also helps to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. For example, the Porsche 911 Carrera with the new 350 hp (257 kW) 3.4-litre direct injection engine and optional PDK returns 34.4mpg Combined based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) - 6mpg less than its predecessor. Also, at 194 g/km CO2, it is the first Porsche sports car to sit below 200 g/km CO2. Let's start with that Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake Mix. As you probably know (because I've mentioned it here five million times), my birthday was last month. And even though I had a professional vegan birthday cake (by Stephanie!) at my official party on the day after my big day, I needed a smaller batch of dessert for my actual birthday. I went to my friend Shara's house that night, and I wanted to tote along some cupcakes. It seemed like the perfect time to try out this new mix! The mix is very versatile, and there are all kinds of suggestions on the back of the package for ways to use it 鈥?sheet cake, cupcakes, brownies!





I opted for the Mint Cupcakes variation, which involved adding a 1/2 teaspoon of mint extract to the batter. Oh, and I added a bit of green food coloring to the frosting, made with my go-to buttercream recipe from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. These were so good! The cake was light and airy, and honestly, if I didn't know it was gluten-free, I wouldn't have been able to tell. The folks at Shara's house 鈥?all non-vegans 鈥?enjoyed them! Next, I tried the Gluten-Free Buttermilk Biscuit Mix. I've never tried gluten-free biscuits, so I had no idea what to expect. The dough rolled out nicely, and it was easy to cut the biscuits and transfer them to a baking sheet. They didn't get quite as fluffy as my homemade gluten-containing biscuits do, but that's okay. I loved the flavor 鈥?the chickpea flour really shines though. They were a tad more crumbly than I'm used to, and the one I tried to split and butter fell apart.

Has it really been 30 years since the original hot Golf first arrived? Actually the first 1.6-litre four-speed GTi went on sale in Germany in 1976 so the German market got its hands on this anniversary model last year. So how are we celebrating? With this limited edition GTi edition 30, the latest in a series of anniversary Golfs we鈥檝e been offered over the years. Just 1500 Edition 30s will be available to UK buyers priced at 拢22,295 for the three-door, or 拢22,795 for the five-door we drove. Which makes it 拢1935 more expensive than the regular GTi. What do I get for my investment? The changes aren鈥檛 massive - this is a special edition, not a completely re-engineered car. Outside there are smoked lights, 18-inch multi-spoke wheels that look just like the ones fitted to the GTi CAR Magazine raced in the Volkswagen Cup last year, and various bits of colour coding on the normally black body kit. You might think differently but we think it looks awful - less like a performance car and more like a regular Golf 1.6 with a set of aftermarket rims.





The dimpled golfball gearknob makes a return, there are leather bolsters and headrests for the gorgeous tartan seats, red stitching for the best hot hatch steering wheel in the business and some pretty garish red edging to the floor mats. But there's no extra equipment, which means that while you get ESP, dual-zone climate control and six airbags as standard, you have to pay extra for things like a CD changer. I鈥檓 struggling here. Where鈥檚 the extra 拢2k been spent? Thankfully some of it did get spent on something useful - the engine. It鈥檚 the same direct injection 2.0-litre four but power has been raised by 30bhp to 227bhp and torque by 14lb ft to 221lb ft. So it鈥檚 even better to drive than before? Yes, it is. There are no changes to the suspension - although the GTi鈥檚 chassis wasn鈥檛 exactly in need of a makeover - but the engine鈥檚 extra sparkle really adds some urgency to the driving experience. Our one complaint of the regular GTi is that it鈥檚 sometimes too good for its own good and therefore lacks a bit of drama. But the 30 goes some way to answering that criticism. Let鈥檚 get straight to the point: we love the extra poke, like the leather on the seats and pretty much hate all the other changes. The problem is that the standard car is just so good that this really does feel like gilding the lilly. Having said that, we do think that Volkswagen should make the more powerful engine standard or at least available as an option on the regular car. If it doesn鈥檛, there are plenty of companies out there who can tweak your standard GTi for a few hundred pounds and from what we hear these software mods are undetectable by your dealer.





Lastly even with all the extra fun added in, the hot hatch still has the ability to be your only car, with the added versatility that its hatchback provides. Mercedes-Benz still has no plans for diesels in the U.S. While there are several new hot hatches to choose from, there鈥檚 one that has continued to be the benchmark for the class - the iconic Volkswagen GTI. Over the years we鈥檝e seen the GTI transform from a slightly more powerful version of the basic Golf to being one of VW鈥檚 most iconic models. VW has offered everything from a small turbo to even a six-cylinder engine under the hood of the GTI. Today the GTI options have been simplified with only one engine option and one body style, but that鈥檚 because it works. For the 2018 model year, the VW GTI has gotten a small facelift, which will have to hold GTI fans over until the all-new eighth generation arrives, which isn鈥檛 too far away.





On the outside the front and rear fascias have been slightly tweaked, but you probably wouldn鈥檛 be able to call out the details, unless you parked it right next to the 2017 GTI. The bigger news is that VW has managed to massage an extra 10 horsepower from the GTI鈥檚 turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine, compared to the 2015-2017 GTI equipped with the Performance Pack. The 2.0L now generates 220 horsepower and can be mated to either a six-speed manual or the six-speed DSG automatic transmission. The GTI SE and Autobahn trim levels also now get the Golf R鈥檚 brakes and to keep you from destroying the GTI, it now has forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking. Inside you鈥檒l find an eight-inch glass touchscreen that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, but it still feels a generation behind some of the latest systems that VW鈥檚 rivals offer. The lovely plaid seats are still standard and if you prefer leather, that鈥檚 an option as well. In front of the driver there鈥檚 a small digital display, but overall the gauge cluster is not as cool as the fully digital system Digital Cockpit that鈥檚 offered in the Tiguan and Atlas.

It gets a tilt and slide panoramic sunroof too. The Polo GTI is a hot hatch because of the firepower Volkswagen has given it. It has a 1.4liter Twincharge engine coupled to a 7 speed Dual Clutch Gearbox. The engine makes 180ps at 6200rpm and 250Nm torque from 2000-4500rpm. The DSG is a dry clutch version of Volkswagen Group's pretty renowned dual clutch transmission. I have to state that this is the most technologically advanced small capacity engine that we Malaysians can buy at this moment. Just think about it, the twin charge engine is actually a 1400cc engine that makes 180ps (over 100ps per liter) by way of a supercharger to bring out low end grunt and a turbocharger for power at the higher rpm. It is a heck of a complex setup and note that after this generation of the Polo GTI and the Scirocco 1.4, Volkswagen may not produce it anymore due to its complexity and cost. Of course, with complexity comes maintenance costs, but this for now is another matter - I shall discuss reliability somewhere down below. Driving the darn thing. It is easy to find a nice driving position in the Polo GTI.





Much nicer and sportier with the sports seats and a sightly flat bottomed, sportier (perforated leather for better grip) steering wheel with 'GTI' embossed on it. The steering wheel adjusts nicely and is of a very nice shape to hold. You then start the Polo with a traditional key too. Now once on the move you notice that the DSG works like any other automatic transmission. The gear changes are smooth and instantaneous. However unlike a normal torque convertor transmission it isn't a paramount of smoothness and needs more modulation than you'd like. It has the feeling of a regular manual transmission clutch in its initial take up and needs a bit of getting used to its feel. No, you'd never stall like a manual, but you feel that it does have a clutch down there somewhere. A lot of choices and I've used all depending on the time of day and location.





Keep it in 'D' for most normal drives and everything is smooth. The ride of the Polo GTI is of course busier than the usual Polo. It feels more firm and nuggety. Most bumps are still very tolerable and things smoothen out once you're cruising at around 110-120kmh. In fact hit 200kmh and you still feel secure in this car. There are no harsh crashes or any of that sort even if you encounter a large pothole or speed hump. It is slightly busy, but not of the head nodding variety, and not till you'd rather opt for something else instead. There is more tyre noise compared to the standard Polo, but on 215/40 series tyres, its about right but not loud and irritating. Make sure you have good tyres and all should be well in the road noise department. The Polo GTI is one car which loves the accelerator pedal being prodded.

While it might not be as capacious as its hatchback sibling, the 2020 Corolla sedan's trunk isn't too bad.

However upon whipping out my microscope I spotted the bigger diffuser and more aggressive front end containing bigger intakes and a splitter. My favorite part though was the digital dial interface. It was really easy to use and the interface was intuitive enough that I learned my away around it in a few moments. The same cannot be said for the touch interface in the center console but more on that in a bit. As familiar as the exterior is the same cannot be said for the driving experience.





Having personally owned a few GTI鈥檚 in the past I do have a pretty good reference but I have to say that the TCR is quite a big step from previous generations. Let鈥檚 start with the steering which is communicative and super sharp. If I just looked at the steering wheel the car wanted to turn and once you started turning the car responded beautifully. As I approached the corner on the brakes I was struck by the 鈥榣iveliness鈥?of the rear end, moving around just enough to give the feeling that the car is alive and by no means flat or overly-safe. You could even argue that it was too communicative for a Golf but personally I was enjoying myself so much that I hope all future fast-Golfs feel like this. Heading towards the apex I anticipated a bunch of on-power understeer but was shocked to feel the car continuing to rotate around the corner and head to the exact place I wanted to be at the exit.
