Fun Cars On A $20,000 Budget: America’s Original BMW M3 Killer

How does the original CTS-V hold up after over a decade?

At the turn of the century, it seemed like the US car industry was heading in a very different direction than the European car industry. In the US, a luxury car was just a normal car with a different badge, some hard leather, fake wood, and let’s not forget the chrome. In 2001, BMW gave us the E46, which to this day remains one of the greatest sports saloons of all time. The US had received the previous E36 M3, but it was a watered down version of what Europe got. The E46 was practically perfect, and it was going to be tough to beat.

The E46 M3 didn’t have much competition at first. Sure there were a few cars from AMG, but they were more focused on burning rubber at a set of lights than setting fast lap times. The E46 M3 had a 3.2-liter inline-six, which produced 333 hp. This gave it a blistering 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds. That was almost as fast as a Corvette at the time. It seemed unlikely that any automaker could conquer the M3, but that didn’t stop Cadillac from taking one hell of a swing at it. The result from Cadillac’s hard work was the original CTS-V. Basically, Cadillac took its midsize sedan, and stuffed in the Z06’s 5.7-liter LS6 V8, which gave the CTS-V 400 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. America was ready to smash the Germans with V8 power.

The CTS-V was astonishingly good value because a base M3 Coupe cost $47,100 in 2004, whereas the much more powerful CTS-V was $51,500, just $4,400 more. But how do these two cars fair now that both have been out of production for over ten years? Both cars can be purchased for under $20,000, but which one is the better value? As we said, the CTS-V was the much more powerful car, but this only helped it get to 60 mph in just 0.2 of a second faster at 4.6 seconds. This may be due to the Cadillac hauling around an extra 400 pounds of curb weight. Whereas the E46 has a growing collector circle around it, people seem to have forgotten about the CTS-V.

Everyone wants the much more powerful second generation CTS-V, which means that the first gen cars have often been overlooked. Even though we found plenty of M3s and CTS-Vs under $20,000, the price range was much smaller for the Cadillac. Even the most expensive CTS-V that we found was only $30,000, but a pristine M3 can command over $70,000. Anyone looking for a sound investment should probably stick with the M3, but that doesn’t mean that the Cadillac doesn’t have its advantages. Maintaining an old BMW M car is very expensive and can be a big undertaking. The Cadillac on the other hand is all GM parts so it can be much cheaper and easier to maintain.

In 2006, the Cadillac replaced the LS6 with the more modern LS2, which offered a broader torque curve with the higher displacement of 6.0 liters. It didn't help performance much, but the LS2 does have a very big aftermarket.

Surprise! Cadillac CT6 V-Sport Revealed With 550-HP V8

Say hello to the first ever Cadillac CT6 V-Sport.

Cadillac recently hinted it wants to expand its current range of high-performance V-Series models. Staying true to its promise, the automaker has just revealed the range-topping CT6 sedan is getting the V-Performance treatment for the first time in the model’s history. Cadillac also announced the entire CT6 lineup is getting an overhaul incorporating styling cues inspired by the stunning Escala Concept.

The first in a series of new Cadillac performance cars, the new CT6 V-Sport boasts an all-new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces an estimated 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. Cadillac says the engine is a clean-sheet design with unique elements offering a balance between performance, efficiency, and compact packaging. At the heart of Cadillac’s new twin-turbo V8 is a “hot V” configuration, whereby the turbochargers are mounted between the heads to eliminate turbo lag and reduce the engine’s overall size. Power is sent through a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Optimized gear ratios enhance performance and helps reduce engine speed on the highway for refinement and efficiency. “With the introduction of the all-new CT6 V-Sport, Cadillac begins a new chapter in its performance legacy with the introduction of the brand’s first-ever twin-turbo V8 engine,” Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “It is the centerpiece of the new CT6 V-Sport, an engaging sport sedan infused with DNA of Cadillac’s world-renowned and championship-winning motorsports program.” Distinguishing the first-ever Cadillac CT6 V-Sport is a bold, dark front with a large V-inspired mesh grille, new horizontal LED headlamps and a rear spoiler.

Other exterior changes include lower aero components, unique 20-inch V-Sport wheels with summer performance tires, and Gloss Black side window surround trim. Complementing the aggressive look is an exhaust system with active valves that reduce back pressure to deliver a more ear-shattering note. Cadillac hasn’t revealed any 0-60 mph times, but it’s clear the CT6 has been optimized for performance. Engineers have modified the steering and Magnetic Ride Control damper calibrations, installed a limited-slip differential, and a new 19-inch Brembo brake system developed specifically for the CT6 with four piston calipers in front and performance pads.

There’s also a dedicated Track mode, which revises the AWD torque split and track-tuned Active Rear Steer, among other modifications.“ The CT6 V-Sport was developed for driving enthusiasts who want the best of both worlds: a high-performance sports sedan and a luxury car with all the comforts and technology that come with it,” said Lyndon Lie, CT6 chief engineer. “With its lightweight architecture, an all-new Cadillac Twin Turbo V-8 coupled with the tightened suspension and revised AWD torque split, we’ve enhanced the CT6 to be well-balanced and capable of all conditions.”

Expect to learn more about the new Cadillac CT6 V-Sport when it debuts at the New York Auto Show next week alongside the 2019 XT4. In addition, the 2019 CT6 lineup has been refreshed with a facelift and a raft of new tech. New horizontal elements give the front end a more aggressive appearance, and there’s also a new rear lighting graphic, which is only visible at night. It also incorporates Cadillac’s new “Y” trim strategy, where each model will have Luxury and Sport trims. Non-V-Sport CT6 models will feature new horizontal high-lumen headlights and a revised taillight design inspired by the Escala Concept.

There’s a raft of new tech too, including an infotainment system with a 10-inch 1080p display offering a smartphone-like experience with faster responses and improved voice recognition. A range of driver assists will include Forward Collision Alert, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Forward/Reverse Automatic Braking, and Safety Alert Seat. Cadillac’s semi-autonomous Super Cruise system will only be available in non-V-Sport models.

Cadillac Needs To Put This High-Performance XT4-V Crossover Into Production

A new render shows what the Cadillac XT4 could look like with the V-Series treatment.

Cadillac finally answered our prayers when it expanded its V-Series performance range with the surprise announcement of the CT6 V-Sport (now abruptly renamed the CT6-V), which packs Cadillac’s new all-new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces an estimated 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. But while Cadillac offers V-Series variants of the ATS and CTS, the XT4 crossover only has one engine option: a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

To us, the XT4 seems like a prime candidate to get the V-Series treatment to as Cadillac is lacking a high-performance SUV in its line-up that compliments its current sports cars. Given the rising popularity of crossovers, particularly in the US, introducing a hotter version of the XT4 makes a lot of sense. Cadillac recently announced the V-Series range will continue to expand after the launch of the 2019 CT6-V, which could include SUVs.

Sadly, Cadillac hasn’t confirmed if we will get a hotter XT4, but thanks to a render sent to us by Allcarnews we now know what an XT4 V could look like. The XT4's sporty styling translates well to the V-Series treatment, as the render depicts the compact crossover with the usual V-Series performance-focused add-ons such as carbon fiber hood vents, larger wheels housing beefier brakes, and quad exhaust tips. In our dreams, the range-topping XT4-V would utilize the CT6-V’s 550-hp 4.2-liter V8. Make it happen, Cadillac.

Cadillac Revamps CUE To Mimic Smartphone Interface

Will this be the piece of software that finally solves the headache that is the in-car infotainment system?

The widespread adoption of computers has without a doubt changed society, and generally, this has been for the better. Inside the car, however, automakers and computer programmers still struggle to design the computers that power navigation, climate control, and multimedia functions in a user friendly manner, making it so that most drivers revert to using their smartphones behind the wheel. While this is certainly a danger, the jury is out on whether or not infotainment systems make using technology behind the wheel safer.

Thankfully Cadillac is trying to amend that. After doing away with the first generation of CUE, short for Cadillac User Experience, it ushered in new software that’s easier to use, more responsive, and that carries extended capabilities that include onboard WiFi and access to the latest local traffic and weather information. Our experience with CUE uncovered a solid infotainment software system, far from the worst, but equally as far from being easy to use thanks to a complicated layout that feels cluttered and takes time to read through. That won’t be the case once the new Cadillac CTS is out because coming equipped in the refreshed 2017 CTS models will be the newest rendition of CUE.

Aside from highlights like a predictive navigation system, a fully stocked app suite, and cloud-based driver preferences that make it easy to retain settings when switching vehicles (perfect for Book by Cadillac subscribers), the system has had a major overhaul that makes it easier to use. Logic dictates that the best user experience with an infotainment system is one that minimizes the time needed to interact with it while offering a variety of controls, either on the touchscreen itself or by using a set of centrally mounted buttons (ideally both), to help shorten that time.

That’s why Cadillac decided to code the functionality that mimics the best smartphone apps and software practices into CUE to make the screen easy to read and feel less cluttered. After the newest version of CUE debuts on the CTS, it will migrate to the new XTS and ATS sedans coming in 2018 as well as on subsequent model releases. Unfortunately, current Cadillac owners will not be able to upgrade, which means they’ll miss out on the new cloud-based features like real time fuel prices and parking information. Buyers will be treated to a free year of CUE’s connected services while Apple Car Play and Android Auto will remain standard in case driver’s don’t care to renew the subscription.

Cadillac Is Bringing The Axe Down On The ATS, CTS, And XTS In 2019

So much for Cadillac's ambitions to take on Germany with dynamic and good looking sedans.

Cadillac CEO Johan de Nysschen says a lot of things, but it was with a somber tone that he dispensed the bad news that was only hinted to the public just days earlier when contrasting reports emerged, one stating that the Cadillac CT6 would get the axe along with five other General Motors sedans, and another claiming that the news was in fact a fluke and that the General’s range-topper was going to be left alone. And now, coming via Reuters, is this.

“We have to rebalance our sedan portfolio,” Johan de Nysschen told Reuters in interview. That could mean a million things, but unfortunately Nysschen isn’t making a reference to dynamics-boosting weight distribution. Instead, he's alluding to the imminent demise of the Cadillac XTS, CTS, and ATS. So no, the CT6 isn’t officially getting the axe, but every other sedan in GM’s lineup is. On initial impression, that seems to run counter to Cadillac’s sales figures, which saw a 27% increase worldwide through the first half of the year. However that doesn't seem to be where the trajectory is headed for Cadillac if it keeps up business as usual.

China, now the world’s largest Caddy consumer, saw sales drop 1.6% in the first half of the year, with sedans dropping 16.3% during the same time period. The problem is that Cadillac currently has four sedans and two SUVs, numbers it will need to flip in order to remain profitable. More SUV reinforcements are already in the pipeline and set for debut within the next few years, but to fill the large gap left by eliminating three sedans, Cadillac will release a car dubbed the CT5 to cater to mid trim sedan needs. It’ll cost between $35,000 and $45,000, giving Cadillac fans an option smaller than the CT6 and hopefully replacing our precious ATS-V and CTS-V with the CT5-V.

Fighting tinier German competitors like the Audi A3 will be a small sedan that remains unnamed. The change won’t happen suddenly, although it’ll certainly feel that way. Instead of dropping the axe right now, Cadillac will wait until the current ATS, CTS, and XTS go stale in 2019 and forgo a refresh or redesign. It’s too bad that Cadillac’s push to take on Germany has fallen short due to the changing tides of the industry.

Cadillac's Twin-Turbo V8 Engine Now Has An Awesome New Logo

But will it appear in more places than just the CT6?

Cadillac surprised us when it decided to reveal a V-Sport version of its flagship CT6 sedan. The CT6 V-Sport was set to be powered by Cadillac's new 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8, producing a whopping 550 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. Cadillac then deemed its new car was sporty enough to forgo the V-Sport badge, changing the name to the CT6-V .

The CT6 will now the be the first of Cadillac's newly-named 'CT' models to receive a V badge. It will also be the first to utilize the company's 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8, nicknamed the Blackwing, which will also be offered in a 500-hp state of tune on the CT6 platinum.

Along with a cool name like Blackwing, Cadillac wanted to make sure it had an awesome logo to accompany it. GM Authority has uncovered what this new logo will look like, along with trademark filings in both the United States and Canada. The logo consists of “two stylized wings comprised of six elongated geometric shapes.”

We expect the logo to appear somewhere on the engine cover, not on the exterior of the car. Interestingly, the logo did not show up when Cadillac first revealed the CT6 V-Sport, as the engine was originally referred to as the LTA.

The Blackwing engine will be hand-built by just six workers, with each motor being assembled by hand. With such a heavy emphasis on exclusivity, we aren't sure what other cars the Blackwing engine could appear in. It seems like a lot of work to go through on GM's part to develop a new engine and a cool new logo, just to use it in a single car.

Cadillac's new V8 could eventually appear in the next-generation Escalade or be borrowed for the rumored mid-engine Corvette. Either way, we doubt we have seen the full potential of the Blackwing engine.

Cadillac's Revolutionary Lease Program Might Be A Huge Failure

So much for being able to lease a carmaker's whole lineup.

Cadillac recently introduced a new program that would allow customers to lease every car in its lineup for $1,500. The program is called "Book By Cadillac" and it's basically a program that allows customers to switch out cars from Cadillac. This means that someone could have a CTS-V for a trip to the beach, then take an Escalade the next week on a ski trip. We absolutely loved this idea, and hoped that other automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz would copy it. However, according to 24/7 Wall Street, the program may be a colossal failure.

According to the report, Book customers get no response when they sign up for the service. GM also claims that it does not have enough cars for all of the people who want to sign up for the program. The service is only available in New York City as a test, but Cadillac still cannot fulfill subscriptions. Some customers have received this message when they try to sign up, "Thank you for your interest in becoming a Book by Cadillac member. At this time, there have been more requests than the number of open subscriptions. When a Book by Cadillac subscription becomes available, you will be contacted about the next steps." This is certainly not good for an expensive luxury service.

If Cadillac can't make this service work in New York City alone, we don't think that it bodes well for an expansion into other cities and regions. We were really hoping that Mercedes-Benz would launch a similar service where customers could have a G-Class one week and an AMG GT the next. However, if Cadillac shows that the idea isn't viable, we can kiss goodbye the idea of other automakers starting similar programs.

GM Wants To Double Cadillac Sales By 2021 With The Aid Of Crossovers And China

But what about the European market?

General Motors recently fired Cadillac president and CEO Johan de Nysschen not because he was a bad CEO, but because he wasn’t a good fit for what Cadillac needs in order to survive in the long-term. The competition coming from Germany, Japan, and Korea is stronger than ever and will only gather strength. Survival, even for Cadillac, is not a guarantee. But the American luxury brand is regrouping and getting things in order. If this report from GM Authority via Cadillac Society is correct, then Cadillac’s future has huge potential.

The report claims that at a recent presentation the automaker gave to investment bankers and analysts at the Deutsche Bank Automotive Conference, the automaker revealed plans to increase sales volume and profits two-fold over the next four years.

Double sales and profits by 2021? It’s possible, and here’s how: crossovers and China. Cadillac is already expanding its crossover lineup with the recent introduction of the XT4, set to arrive in American and Chinese showrooms very soon. It will join the XT5 and within the next couple of years, an all-new three-row crossover likely to be dubbed XT6.

A three-model crossover lineup is, in a word, vital. North America and China are the main markets. Not to be done away with entirely, Cadillac’s sedan lineup will also soon be re-worked. As we previously reported, the ATS sedan is dead and we figure the coupe will be phased out around this time next year.

Both it and the CTS will be replaced by a single model, the CT5, in 2020. Cadillac previously went on record stating it launch a new vehicle every six months through 2021. By that time it will have introduced five vehicle lines. Although most of the above is not entirely new information, what we found surprising to see was what we didn’t see: any mention of Europe. Cadillac desperately tried to make a dent in the European market, but it was proven, once again, to be dominated by the German brands, hence Cadillac’s strategy to turn eastward and focus on its home market.
