Automobile Reviews Simply Done: Modern Torqueing

Audi’s radiator grille is the most distinctive, the four rings logo dominate the vents and large goatee-shaped chin is sure to scare motorists up front. It’s stance is muscular and aggressive and though appearing bulky, she scampers like a scalded cat if given some stick. We received two variants of the Q7 the full blown 4.2 litre V8, 350hp monster in goat’s disguise and the tame but equally brilliant cheetah all of 3.6 litre V6 pawing out 280 ponies which snarl with fierce intent. Despite varying power outputs the basic character of both cars is similar. They both growl from anything above 2500 RPM but the V8 thumps out a humongous 440 Nm of torque @3500 RPM pushing you back in your seat. While the V6 does the same a little less aggressively at 360 Nm of torque ranging from 2500 to 5000 RPM giving it immense mid-range thrust. The V8 provided a phenomenal driving experience, mostly due to the quattro all-wheel-drive system which is a remarkable piece of engineering in itself but also in part due to the adaptive air suspension package.

It electronically controls the adaptive damping system on all four wheels, i.e. raising the vehicle height up to 60mm (lift mode) for off road action and lowers height by 28mm for high speed highway cruising (dynamic mode). All vehicle dynamics are managed by the Audi MMI (multi media interface) system mounted on the dash. Also included is an ‘automatic’ setting where the vehicle analyses the road dynamics and adjust the suspension damping and level accordingly. The V6 powered Q7 comes without these and other bells and whistles. Both variants come with a standard 6-speed automatic tiptronic transmission with near perfect gear ratios and an “S” mode that more than judicially keeps her revving close to the red line in every cog. The Q7 in both variants is equally comfortable and does exactly what Audi claim, be a big, comfortable and very very fast SUV. Off the black, the Q7 is not the most capable of vehicles, partly due to the tyres (low profile Bridgestone 275/45R20 designed for wet performance and road comfort). It can handle some mini sand dunes but that’s about it. It takes corners with aplomb and feels like its on rails.

It is the nature of large SUV’s to understeer heavily, but the Quattro system prevents this to a large extent by controlling power to all four wheels. The V6 though provided a better driving experience as it was noticeably lighter and took tighter turns with ease. There is so much to talk about the interiors. Audi bathe you with luxury from the best cows a.k.a leather seats. The big daddy V8 also gets additional safety features as standard, with blind-spot alerts in the wing mirrors and active glare protection from auto dimming rear view mirror. The baby Q7 gets the Audi open sky system which lets in the sun when retracted and also has a tint and fine mesh sun protection cover that rolls in/out at the flick of a switch. The MMI system comes with a host of goodies which include mobile phone bluetooth, in-dash 6-disc Bose audio CD changer, active GPS navigation system, vehicle settings and also self system check amongst many others.

You can go to the extent of specifying how long you want the headlights to be on after you leave the car and even set the speed limit warning to beep at a speed you choose! Boot space (min. 775 lit., max. Road noise too is extremely low. Like other models in its product range, the Q7 comes with a host of airbags and active safety measures and enjoys a 4-star EuroNcap safety rating. Large-diameter (ventilated 350mm front, solid 330mm rear) provide the most reassuring stopping power under any condition. Dual-circuit brake system with diagonal split ABS with EBD, electronic differential lock, traction control system (ASR - what’s that?) and ESP are standard on all variants. The Q7 is a phenomenon but it is in a way over-engineered to perfection. All the technology is a little distracting and the silky smooth ride is missed as you keep playing with all the toys. But you do reach your destination very quickly. She is capable of carrying five or seven passengers in cool comfort (multi-zone climatronic air con). Nudging 2.3 tons of kerb weight she feels solid and planted. For practical reasons, we would vouch for the 3.6 litre V6 Q7, it is nimble, relatively simple and has most of the gadgets with many options and moreover more efficient than the V8. Though if you are looking for more power, the V8 is the one for you.

10 Common BMW Parts Issues & Repairs

The E53 was BMW’s first generation SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle). It was produced for seven model years and you’ll still find plenty of them on the road today. Price, style and functionality all make this an attractive vehicle to own. I have created a list of the top ten repairs any BMW X5 owner or potential buyer should be aware of on this vehicle. For added convenience, I’ve linked directly to many of the exact replacement parts discussed below, and remember, you can always browse our extensive online catalog of BMW parts for any of your other BMW maintenance and repair needs. We offer a wide variety of kits that include well-researched collections of BMW parts including both genuine OEM parts as well as premium BMW aftermarket parts. X5 models with the N62 engine have a coolant transfer pipe that runs from the front to the rear of the engine located under the intake valley pan. The front seal fails over time causing a coolant leak from the weep hole by the timing cover. The original design is a one piece tube with a seal that can take up to 20 hours of labor to replace.

We also sell a complete kit (100K10125) with all the correct, necessary BMW parts included (same transfer pipe, intake gaskets, and new valley pan). If any one of the doors will not open, then chances are the door handle carrier is broken. There is a plastic piece that tends to break, which allows the cable to hang loose and prevent the door from being opened. A replacement carrier is the only fix. As a cost-effective alternative, we offer our eEuro Preferred BMW aftermarket door handle carriers. The BMW X5 M54 engine uses the same parts that the E46 models used with this engine. Our BMW cooling system kit (100K10097), includes the expansion tank, cap, water pump, and thermostat. Each of those BMW parts fail because they are made of plastic. The constant expansion and contraction of these plastic components coupled with the heat of the engine compartment and you can start to see why this BMW system requires frequent maintenance.

The original water pump has a plastic impeller which is prone to breaking apart, so this kit also includes the upgraded parts for that - a Hepu water pump with a metal impeller. The BMW X5’s timing chain guides should be replaced every 100k miles as maintenance. If left too long, the parts can separate and material can become lodged within the chain or gear. The timing chain can also jump teeth without proper tension on it which would cause catastrophic engine failure. We offer a timing chain kit (100K10089) containing the proper parts you’ll need to repair the M62 engine. We also sell the M62 timing tool (2894) which is required to complete this repair. Air suspension systems are complex and include many different parts to make them work. BMW suspension systems will include air struts, air springs, compressor, accumulator, lines, and sensors. Because of this complexity one item isn’t more prone to failure than another.

There can even be variations in parts so it’s always best to call in with the VIN for proper application fitment. While bushing life is attributed to driving habits and road surface, some do bear a greater load than others. That BMW parts typically only lasts between 60-80k miles. The bushing itself is a rubber housing filled with hydraulic fluid. A faulty tail lamp assembly may trigger a “Check Rear Lamp/Brake Lamp” message on the dash. Always inspect the bulb first and then turn your attention to the tail lamp assembly. The control module will detect a malfunction by monitoring the resistance of the bulb circuit. A bad bulb connection at the tail lamp circuit board, which is usually caused by corrosion, will trigger the malfunction indicator. BMW part numbers will vary since there is a chassis split at 10/2003, and also if your vehicle has white or clear turn signal lenses.

Volkswagen India To Launch Four New SUVs: Touareg, Tiguan Allspace, T-Roc & T-Cross

Audi S3 Red Car Transportation Audi Audis3 Quattro - EyeEm - 웹Volkswagen India is using a new strategy to grow in India and this strategy involves the launch of quite a few SUVs. Indians love their SUVs and hatchbacks. Volkswagen already has the Polo taking care of the hatchback end of the business and now VW plans to launch a few SUVs. The Volkswagen Tiguan is currently the only VW SUV on sale in India. In international markets though, Volkswagen has up to 10 SUVs on sale. Having an SUV to suit every buyer's needs and preferences has helped VW improve sales massively in International markets. VW has got lots of profits through this SUV-led strategy and according to a report by Autocar, the German marque seems to believe the same strategy will work out for the Indian market as well. In Volkswagen's new plan, the Tiguan will continue to be on sale in India while the German brand will add four more SUVs to the line-up. The SUVs being considered for the Indian market include the T-ROC, Touareg, T-Cross and the Tiguan Allspace.

We had earlier reported about the Volkswagen Allspace being launched in the Indian market. The Tiguan Allspace is essentially a longer version of the Tiguan that is already on sale in India. Of all the SUVs planned for India, the Tiguan Allspace will be the first one to be launched. The Tiguan Allspace will be powered by the same 2.0-litre diesel engine powering the Skoda Kodiaq which in itself is essentially a more premium rebadged version of the VW Allspace on sale in International markets. It will push out 148bhp and 340Nm and is mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The Volkswagen T-ROC is a crossover that is based on the same platform that underpins the VW Polo. In essence, it is a crossover that rides a lot higher than the Polo but does not lose out on handling prowess. The VW T-ROC is 252mm shorter than the Tiguan and hence is not a very big vehicle. However, it does look butch and muscular thanks to the way it has been designed.

It is a fresh design to come out of the Volkswagen stable and we can expect that the upcoming models from the VW stable will be based on this styling. It features modern interiors with lots of digital elements involved. It includes touchscreen infotainment and the best in terms of safety. Initially, the VW T-ROC will be powered by a 1.5-litre TSI engine with an output of around 150bhp. We can expect it to be priced in the range of Rs 23 lakh (ex-showroom). The Volkswagen T-Cross is the big one for the Indian market as this one has already been confirmed for India. It is based on the same MQB AO platform that underpins the new VW Polo in international markets. However, the model that will come to India will be substantially different from the ones sold elsewhere. The SUV will be more spacious, ride taller and will be built to a cost so that VW can experience more sales numbers.

The Touareg badge is no stranger to the Indian market. The premium SUV was on sale in India between 2008 and 2013 but then was phased out due to low sales caused by tough competition. However, VW is considering the Touareg for the Indian market once again because the industry and market have matured. It is based on the MLB Evo platform which is shared by Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini and VW. It is because of this that the VW Touareg went down on sales. Buyers can get a more premium vehicle from a more premium brand for the same amount of money. This time too, even if it is launched, the VW Touareg would face the same issues as it did the last time around. The Indian market is certainly maturing more and more by the day and it is certain that there are more buyers of premium vehicles today than ever before. However, we are still doubtful if people would want to spend around Rs 70 lakh on a VW car when we can also get a similarly-specced Audi for the same amount. The other three SUVs being considered for the Indian market though will certainly do well.

The main thing that represents a negative mark against it will be its age, however with such an expansive merchant system, if anything does happen then it ought to be not difficult to alter. Likewise with the S-MAX, the Ford Galaxy's driving position is extraordinary. You sit high yet at the same time low enough with the goal that you don't feel you're 'on top' of the auto, while the A-columns are thin, so its not difficult to see out. The driving position has heaps of conformity, the dashboard is well made with loads of delicate touch materials, and all the controls are sensibly set. The Galaxy's enormous in addition to over the S-MAX is the way that grown-ups truly can go in the sixth and seventh seats. In spite of having comparable measurements, the Ford Galaxy brags expanded headroom which implies travelers have little issue getting settled; they can even slide the seats separately and lean back them. With the back seats set up boot space is still a respectable 308 liters - which is about the same as offered in a supermini.

New Engine For Touran (DE)

Teste Volkswagen cross up! TSI 2018Text from Volkswagen AG. Wolfsburg, 03 April 2006 - Volkswagen is expanding the engine range for the Touran. Now available: The 1.4 I TSI engine with 103 kW / 140 hp and the powerful 2.0 I TDI with 125 kW / 170 hp. The innovative twincharger-engine concept for better performance and fuel economy is a groundbreaking development for the future, which was first introduced on the Golf GT. 1390 ccm, is that the pulling power of the engine is reached even at low revs thus reducing fuel consumption. The FSI engine is twin-charged by a turbocharger and compressor and generates a peak torque of 220 Nm (1750-4000 rpm), with a consumption of only 7,4 l premium fuel (95 oct.) for 100 km. When the car accelerates, the compressor delivers the necessary pulling power, while the turbocharger takes over at higher revs. The smooth torque curve allows for lazy gear changes yet the performance of the car is still sporty.

2019 Honda Accord Prices, Reviews, And Pictures

Is the Honda Accord a Good Car? The 2019 Accord is an outstanding midsize car that is both practical and fun. It has a generous list of standard safety technology and a spacious cabin. It features a lineup of lively engines, and it navigates twists and turns with ease. We named the Accord the winner of our 2019 Best Midsize Car for Families award because of its excellent combination of cargo and passenger space, safety and reliability ratings, positive reviews from automotive journalists, and available family-friendly features. We also named it a finalist for our 2019 Best Midsize Car for the Money award because it has one of the best combinations of quality and value in its class. The icing on the cake is its high-quality cabin and great fuel economy estimates. Should I Buy the Honda Accord? If you’re searching for a midsize car, you should definitely consider the Accord. This Honda is a fantastic vehicle with a reasonable base price.

That said, there are several good options in the very competitive midsize car class. The Toyota Camry is similar to the Accord, but its optional V6 engine is more powerful than any of the Honda's engines. The Nissan Altima has a roomy cabin and a comfortable ride, and it comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Should I Buy a New or Used Honda Accord? The 2019 Accord is part of a generation that began with the 2018 model year. The only notable change for 2019 is that the 1.5-liter engine is no longer available in Touring models. The 2018 redesign brought a new base turbo-four engine with more power than the 2017 base four-cylinder (192 horsepower up from 185), an optional turbo four-cylinder that replaced the previously available V6, and improved fuel efficiency. Honda also added loads of active safety features to the 2018 Accord, including standard traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and driver drowsiness monitoring, along with available rear cross traffic alert, a head-up display, and blind spot monitoring.

These substantial changes help make the 2018 Accord significantly better than models from the previous generation (even though the 2017 Accord’s optional V6 engine is more powerful than any engine offered in newer Accords). That's why we recommend sticking with a 2018 or 2019 Accord. Read our 2017 Accord and 2018 Accord reviews to get further insight into the differences between the current and previous generation. Also check out our Used Car Deals page to learn about savings and discounts you can find on used cars. We’ve analyzed 19 Honda Accord reviews, as well as fuel economy estimates, performance specs, safety features, and more, to give you all the information you need to make a smart car-buying decision. U.S. News & World Report has been reviewing cars, trucks, and SUVs since 2007, and our Best Cars team has more than 75 years of combined automotive industry experience. To remain impartial, we do not accept extravagant gifts from automakers, and an outside source handles our advertising.

How Much Does the Honda Accord Cost? 23,720 base price is about average for the class. 34,990 for the top-of-the-line Touring trim. The Accord Hybrid is reviewed separately. Check out our U.S. News Best Price Program for great savings at your local Honda dealer. You can also find excellent manufacturer incentives on our Honda deals page. Which Is Better: Honda Accord or Toyota Camry? The Toyota Camry and the Accord finish neck and neck in our midsize car rankings. Both cars feature high-end interior materials, expansive cabins, plenty of standard driver assistance features, and great fuel economy estimates. There are a few key differences, however. The Honda offers two turbo-four engines, and the Toyota comes with either a four-cylinder or V6 engine. All provide plenty of power, but the Camry's V6 has nearly 50 more horsepower than the Accord’s most-powerful turbo-four. However, the Accord has a bit more torque and is quicker off the line thanks to its turbocharger.

Volkswagen Automotive Legends

Volkswagen golf / Rally cars for saleVW Golf GTI do you have one? Over the years the Golf GTI has changed its shape many times, but has it improved or could the car worse nowadays? So you can all agree that the Golf engine has some decent numbers but the question is will it really do the job when it is on the road. Inside the Golf you can have the choice of leather or material id say a lot of people will go for leather just because it makes the car so much better for looks and when you try to sell it. When you think of Volkswagen you will most likely think of the classic beetle since it is the car that really introduced the Volkswagen logo around the world. The first Volkswagen car was designed in 1934 by Ferdinand Porsche as a method of cheap reliable transport. Through the years VW have become a global force in the manufacturing sector getting bigger and bigger with every new design. Not to long after the beetle had been created and unveiled the Golf was released.

It was over 35 years ago when the Volkswagen Golf first made its appearance and it has been a consistently popular seller ever since. The Brand New Volkswagen Golf Mark VI comes with a choice of four petrol engines and three diesel engines. My personal pick of the bunch is the twin-charged 1.4Litre Petrol which produces 160Bhp which is phenomenal for a car of this size. Driving this car is unlike the experience of the previous model Golf (the Mark V), as it adds an element that its predecessor was lacking slightly; excitement. Other than the GTi models, the Golf has never been considered an exciting drive. It has been described as safe, comfortable, economic and ecological but never exciting. The supercharged and turbocharged 1.4 litre engine feels raw, edgy and above all, powerful. All of a sudden the VW Golf seems al lot less British after all. Essentially, the Volkswagen Golf Mk VI has retained everything that the consuming public loved about the car since its initial inception, but they have been treated to a few added extras now. The Golf is still safe, comfortable, economical and ecological, but now it has the capability to force your head back into the headrest and leave you with a silly schoolboy grin on your face. Although the Golf has evolved into the consummate city car, if you take the new Golf out onto country lanes, you will see why I can say with confidence that this is the most impressive the Golf has ever been.

During the time of Christ, golfers used wooden golf balls and wooden golf clubs made from the hickory tree. Then, in the early 1600s, the featherie golf ball was invented. The featherie golf ball was a hand sewn cowhide bag stuffed with goose feathers and painted. Because it flew so beautifully, it lasted for 200 years. In 1848 Reverend Doctor Robert Adams hardened the sap of the gutta percha tree into latex and invented the gutta percha golf ball, which replaced the featehrie golf ball from 1850 until 1900, when rubber took over. The rubber balls lasted until 1930. Todays balls have a titanium metal core with many layers of surlyn and balata coverings. Golf club shafts evolved from hickory tree wood with persimmon tree heads to steel shafts and now to graphite shafts with very large titanium heads. Despite the incredible advances in golf club and golf ball technology, the handicaps of male and female golfers have not gone down, according to noted author and custom club fitter Steven Passarell.

How could this be? Here is the answer. Famed Psychiatrist and 9 Handicap Sigmund Freud explained the human ego: “The human ego is the part of the cerebellum concerned most with feeling like a great human being. 500 for added distance off the tee. Their first clue was when golfers in the long drive competition would throw down their driver after their massive hit, and beat their chests with both fists, like the apes with which humans have 99% the same DNA. From the time of Jesus Christ until the time of Jack Nicklaus, scientists knew that the exactly perfect length for the mens driver was 43”. It didnt matter how tall you were because God gave taller players longer arms. 5 golf ball in the trees yet? The pros have their clubs custom made. You arent using the same clubs they are. Only the label is the same. Speaking of Jesus, the X factor golf swing has been heralded as a way to improve your distance. It means that you keep your left heel down, make a tiny hip turn and a big shoulder turn to hit the ball farther. The surgeon recommends letting it come up even farther to save your back. Harry Vardons came up about 5 inches. Jesus recommended three. There is no need to sacrifice your back in your quest for added length off the tee. Try a longer driver, or a new golf psychologist. The only people not benefiting from these long shafts are the golfers. Everyone else, the whole golf industry, is laughing all the way to the bank. An airy, smartly crafted interior makes its own deluxe statement, with no trace of the cost-cutting that once marred the Jetta. A 5.8-inch touch screen is standard. One change appears small, but sums up the advances: The Golf ditches VW’s awkward rotary seatback-adjuster knob, the wrist-wrenching bane of VWs for decades. The gasoline-powered Golf banishes its aging 2.5-liter in-line 5-cylinder for a 1.8-liter direct-injected TSI turbo 4 that’s more powerful even as it sips less fuel — up to 20 percent less. It combines 170 horsepower and a class-thumping 200 pound-feet of torque with an E.P.A. 25 m.p.g. in the city, 36 on the highway (up from 23/30). Those figures apply to the 6-speed automatic transmission; an available 5-speed manual does 1 m.p.g. The TDI gets a new quiet-running 2-liter turbodiesel that makes 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet. The TDI now carries an onboard tank of urea, a pollution-fighting fluid, to meet coming emissions standards. The TDI also trades the gas version’s conventional automatic transmission for a dual-clutch 6-speed DSG automated manual. So equipped, the Golf TDI is rated at 31/43 m.p.g., or 30/45 with the 6-speed manual. But forget the official story. The E.P.A.’s crazy fudge-factoring of fuel economy tests has forced Ford, for one, to reduce its hybrid mileage ratings. Yet while the E.P.A. ’ real-world economy. In my testing, the TDI effortlessly delivered 50 to 53 m.p.g. I cruised at 65 to 70 miles per hour and passed dawdlers at will. And in an admittedly Prius-like run, holding at a resolute 55 m.p.h., the TDI sipped at a wallet-friendly 60 m.p.g.

My Volkswagen Story

As a member of a car club I often wonder what inspires others like myself to join such an organization. Certainly the cameraderie, the sense of being part of a big family, is an important factor. The club I belong to is devoted to all Volkswagens, old and new. The question for others fascinated with these cars is, What got us interested in Volkswagens in the first place? There are probably as many stories of inspiration as there are dandelions in my front yard every Spring. With that said, here is mine. I was born in 1959, and my memory goes as far back as 1962, when I was about two and a half years old. In those days generally only one parent was the breadwinner, as was the case with my father. We only had one car, and besides, my mother didn't know how to drive. The car we had was a 1957 Oval Window Beetle that was purchased "new" in Kansas City, Missouri.

I say "new" because at that time there were waiting lists much like there would be forty-one years later when the New Beetle first hit showrooms. Back in 1957, my father's 1946 Chevy was worn out and he started his search for a new car. He became interested in Volkswagens after reading about them in the popular publications of the day. A good ten years before hippies would exersise the concept of nonconformity, my father decided that he wanted a car that would stand out from the usual gigantic, tail-finned, gas-guzzling dinosaurs that roamed the streets during that period. 1700 he acquired a salesman's demonstrator with just a few kilometers showing on the odometer. Yes, kilometers (for those of you US readers). It would be many years before I would start driving, but I knew that I would be driving a Volkswagen someday. When I was in elementary school in the mid and late 1960's, the Muscle-Car Era, the boys in my classes would argue which cars were better, depending, of course, on what their fathers drove.

Most of the time it was Mustang vs. Corvette vs. Charger vs. GTO. I got many laughs when I contributed Volkswagens to the debates, but I didn't care. I thought the "bug" was better-looking than any of those cars, and I still do. I didn't and still don't care about 0-60 times. It has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and VW owners can all concur. Sadly, in 1970, after 13 years of dependable service and about 257,000 kilometers (160,000 miles,)my father had decided that it was no longer cost-effective to keep the car. Many trips to Oklahoma and the perpetual road salt that covered highways during Midwest winters had taken their toll, and when the amateur patching of bodywork no longer helped it was time to say good-bye to our Beetle. 25 for the VW, so my father gave it to a friend to use as a parts car.

I vividly remember fighting back tears as the friend gave us a ride back to our home. It was as if we had lost a member of the family, and as far as I was concerned we had. I got my Drivers' License in 1976, but I was in a hand-me-down Ford Maverick. Considering the manner in which I drove at 16, it's nothing short of a miracle that I am alive to tell this tale nearly thirty years later. Moving on to 1978, I at last had my own Volkswagen, a 1971 Super Beetle. In the early 1980's I had two more Beetles. In 2000, after trying various other makes I longed for a VW again and bought a 1996 Golf, followed by a 1969 Beetle three years later. Up to that time I was the only member of our VW club who did not own a classic air-cooled model from the early years. In nearly 46 years of life in this world, I have calculated that 22 of those have been with a Volkswagen. I have reached the point of no return now. I will always own a VW of some sort. My 8-year-old daughter has already picked her first car; a New Beetle. Kids have a tendency to change their minds quite often as new interests are acquired, but in this case, I don't think she will. It runs in the family.

In short order, a manager from the Valley dealer called back. 10% higher per month than what the local dealer quoted on a base model, so therefore my counter-offer was reasonable. 302/mo plus tax is their final offer. 50/month for the privilege of sitting on a dead cow every time I climbed into the Volt. I thanked him for his time and hung up. I called the local dealer and said I have 30 minutes to spend with them before I needed to go back home and take care of some things. The salesman had the car waiting for me before I arrived, just outside the tall glass walls of the dealership. I was sold as soon as I laid eyes on it, but figured I’d better check out the cloth interior and drive it for a few blocks before inking a deal. So we took it for a spin…. The cloth looked and felt just fine, and in Sport mode the Volt moved with the spunkiness of the Focus Electric. Fifteen minutes later we were back in the dealership to start the paperwork. My local Chevy dealer really came through for me on this. In retrospect, I do feel really bad about flying off the handle… especially today, after I sifted though unheard voice mail on my cell phone.

Nissan Leaf Vs Volkswagen E-Up! Vs BMW I3 (Exclusive EV Reviews) −

UPDATE: Full BMW i3 review here. I was able to test drive about 8 electric vehicles in Barcelona over the past week. Yes, I realize these vehicles are not all in the same vehicle category, but I think the comparisons could be useful for people nonetheless. I’ll get into more of the technical details in the follow-up reviews. Here, I’m focusing on simplistic observations from a common Joe or common Jill kind of perspective. I’ll start with the world’s best-selling electric car of all time — the Nissan Leaf. The Leaf, like every EV, has great pickup and is super quiet and smooth. The Leaf has an “Eco” driving option that will make the car drive much more efficiently, saving you some money and extending the range of your vehicle in between charges. The button for this is quite large, green, and prominently located on your steering wheel. This, of course, makes it easier to switch in or out of this greener driving mode, but it also calls out to you and reminds you to be intelligent and drive greener. I’m not sure if that was intended, but if it was, I think it was a clever idea.

CES 2016: McLaren 675LT JVCKENWOOD Simplifies, Adds Cameras - 웹However, that’s not the only thing the prominently placed and designed button does. The Leaf also has a couple braking modes. The Leaf has a pretty sweet visualization program to help you back into the location you are aiming for when going in reverse. It’s quite intuitive and lets you get into your spot without having to do any in-seat gymnastics/yoga or having to ask someone how much space you have. It seems quite convenient and I imagine it is appreciated by many a Leaf owner. There are dashboard visualizations for remaining charge, projected range (in the current driving mode), and more. It’s all attractive and very clear. With quite a low center of gravity (due the the batteries), the Leaf feels good and very stable on turns. This is another one of those benefits that exists in most EVs. The VW e-Up! is actually only available in Europe at the moment. Though, it seems likely that it will be brought to the US within a year, following the release of the e-Golf, which is actually not yet available in Europe.

The e-Up! drives very similar to the Leaf. I can’t say that I noticed much of a difference between the two there. The interior was a bit simpler than that of the leaf. The dashboard area also had some interesting visualizations and charge/range information, but it was all a bit simpler than the Leaf. There also seemed to be a bit less space in the front as well as the back seats of the car. One quite unique thing about the eUp! It has 4 regenerative braking options (compared to the Leaf’s 2 to 3 and the BMW i3’s one) — Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level B. It’s very nice to have so much variation here. In my second test drive of the vehicle, I started getting used to the various options a bit, and I definitely appreciated having a lot of options and freedom there for different driving situations and preferences.

The BMW i3 clearly comes at a higher price point and quality. The interior was what you’d expect from BMW. Actually, there was a great deal of space in the foot area in the front — more than I recall in any consumer vehicle. The visualizations and dashboard are very nice and clear. Though, the i3 doesn’t have the reverse driving visualizations that the Leaf or even the e-Up! The BMW i3’s drive was smoother than any car I’ve ever driven (of any type) — though, I’m yet to drive a Tesla. The i3 has excellent acceleration. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 60 mph) in around 7 seconds, a few seconds faster than the Nissan Leaf or VW e-Up! Overall, the i3 was definitely the nicest of the 3 cars I’m writing about today. But, having a significantly higher price, that would be expected. As I just stated, the BMW i3 was my favorite of the 3 vehicles. The Leaf and e-Up!

The next day I got in two rounds at courses in different states. First was 18 holes at the Course at Yale, where I had the distinct pleasure of playing with 11-time Yale club champion Bill Lee and his friend Gerry. Yale is a MASSIVE golf course, with a scale that rivals places like Bethpage Black. Conditioning was an issue due to heavy rains and a subsequent heat wave but the course is a marvel. I played like absolute garbage but you still couldn't wipe the smile off my face that morning! STANDING in the middle of the 5' high depression! I then made an hour long drive back into NY State and Scarsdale, just minutes down the road from Winged Foot, to play the A.W. Tillinghast gem Fenway Golf Club. Fenway isn't as well known as many of the courses I've played but I'm sure the club is fine with that!

They continue their restorative efforts with Gil Hanse, one of the hottest architects in the business right now, leading the way. I whipped around Fenway as a single with a caddy in about two hours and it was a great experience and a lovely course. Much more on Yale and Fenway in future blog posts as well! The lovely par three 17th hole at the A.W. Boy, I'll tell you one thing that's next. I have a hell of a lot of course profiles to catch up on! The golf season is definitely winding down and in about a month and a half I'll be putting the clubs away for the season. I'll be heading to St. George's next week and hope to bring my camera out for that round. The only other course I'm scheduled to play is Monterra at the Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood, Ontario. I've never visited the course before and I'll be playing in a business scramble in a couple weeks - about as fun as going to the dentist but I'll do my best to have a good time.

After visiting relatives and taking coffee close by, I found two guys staring at the car. It’s electric, isn’t it? How does that work? New Bedford was a welcome surprise, with a number of slow chargers within the city limits and EV’s zooming around, two Chevrolet Volt II and three Nissan Leaf, one of them belonging to the town hall. No Teslas though. Nevertheless, it was the first place in the US where I felt having an EV wasn’t something alien to the locals. So, with 125 miles to go, after a I95 Freeway trip with A/C on, the last 15 miles were made using the gas engine. Already in Waterbury, I noticed that the car in gas mode behaves like a regular hybrid, once the batteries have a minimum charge from regenerative breaking, it returns for a few seconds to electric mode. You’ve got a funky little BMW! Saving the best for last, this was the trip I enjoyed most the BMW i3. Striking Looks. I already loved the detailed design of the car, completely different from everything else on the road, with a character that reminded me something between Star Wars and an angry puppy.

The Best Scottish Potted Hough -

The recipe of the best potted hough ever, if you know what I mean! Potted hough comes from the Scottish "hough", a word that means shin, that is the part of the leg between the knee and the ankle bones. Potted hough means therefore shin in a pot. In old Scottish, the dish is also referred to as potted heid, or cheese heid. The reasons for that are not known nowadays. It must be one of those Scottish things that not even the Scottish understand. Scottish - Come hither tae yer mither cause yer fayther disney want ye. English - Please child, come to your mother as your father is really not interested at all! What is a Scottish smile? A useful collection for those who want to communicate with a Scotsman. Scottish women speak Scottish. Glossary of Scottish slang and jargon with their meanings and examples of their use. Scotland's local words are wonderful. The reach heights and plumb depths.

They are rarely less than descriptive. Welcome tae the Scottie Translator from Scotland. Write yer wee bit English phrase in the kistie on the left an we'll chynge it intae Scottie juist lik that! The advantage of moving in with a man, as opposed to get married first is that the person moving in is regarded as a guest for a while. If that person is clever, the while can last forever. It is only that if the person is a woman, she has to decide about wanting to change the man and things or just let them as they were before moving in, when everything was fine. Some women are strangely oblivious of their own good. They want to start cooking and washing right away, before even knowing why. The man will resent this first as an invasion of his territory but at the end he will accept the new system out of love. Then very soon he will get used to it and try as much you would like, he will never revert to his old ways of being the Master of the house, kitchen included.

A Scottish cook book -- I guess it has a potted hough recipe too! When I moved in with Bill, I did not try to change his habits right away. It was not much to be done in Gaborone on a weekend but golf so Saturdays were Bill's golfing days. He used to feel guilty about leaving me alone and wanting to be extra nice in the evenings there was always something special he cooked for me. But no matter how hard he tried, there was nothing that I was more pleased with than the potted hough. He introduced me to this Scottish specialty one day when he run out of other ideas, he said, and never understood why do I like potted hough so much. Well, first of all because of the taste, than the texture, than the fact that it is one clean natural dish with no chemicals added or chemically changed by some complex processing.

Donald wheres your troosers? Potted hough is made out of beef shin, cut slices through the bones. The pieces of shin are placed into a pot, no salt added yet, with water to cover comfortably over. When the content of the pot starts boiling, the fatty foam is spooned off in the first five minutes, as to leave the broth clear and nice. The meet is cooked on a slow heat for long time, up to six hours till the meat can be taken apart just by probing into the pot with a fork. Does it sound strange to the modern human? Then the bones must be taken off the pot, into a mound on a steaming plate. The bones than can be emptied from their marrow which must be eaten on a piece of toasted bread, salted slightly, there and then, next to the stove, before dinner, in fact before or after anything.

If the marrow gets cold, it is all spoilt. Bill never wanted any of it, he said he did not know about that dish. Well, after the bones are out of the pot, the hough is almost done. By now, there is not much broth left, it all boiled down to just cover the meat. The meat appears as of little short strands, like shredded, as it is taken off the bones. The bones are clean of meat, nice bones. The little pieces of fat are taken apart from the neat meat. The remaining broth is cleaned of most of the fat floating on the surface. This can be done simply with a spoon. Then, the broth must be poured over the strands of beef in the bowls. The bowls are left overnight to set into a firm form of aspic. The content of the pot, the potted hough, is dished into bowls and let to harden as an aspic.
